you may already have been told to import all the registry informations that has been backed up by the registry cleaner program into your registry. you can do that if you have not done it yet.

but some of your registry information may have been changed to something else that the backed up registries and the program redo functions may not be able to help bring your system back, this depends on what and how many of registry has been removed/ (or replaced/modified) by the program and after that by Windows..

so i suggest you backup your files/settings and re-install Windows.

Sounds like it damaged the file association or properties for ".lnk" files.

Restore the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.lnk entries - or get someone to save a copy of that key from the same windows version.

you can try that if you want to..

here's a little info and an example of a .reg file from an article that applies to win NT workstation. the reason why the shortcuts don't work may also be the same as this article..

Quote:
Shortcuts and .lnk Files Do Not Work in Windows NT Workstation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q254950/
SYMPTOMS
There are several locations in the registry that are responsible for causing shortcuts to work correctly. If any of these keys becomes corrupted or is missing, shortcuts may not work or may work erratically.
CAUSE
These problems can be caused by shutting down Windows improperly, or by a third-party program that modifies the registry.
the same method of importing the default registry informations may work if you know and can find all the default registries. or may not work, i cannot go any further without more info.

Though that is NT, the entries I checked are the same as for my Win98, so it may be common to all?

If the regcleaner has done that kind of damage though, who knows what else it's ripped apart!
