Sad Windows Restarting...

Ok, lately i've been having some problems with Windows...

Im running Windows XP Professional w/ SP2...

Anyways, Some of the problems are - 1 night I hit [Windows Key] + L to do a fast switch and left some downloads and instant messanger open on my account. I came back in the morning - entered my password - and windows logged back on as if i logged off fully or I restarted. It reloaded explorer shell and all my start up programs without my downloads open or instant messanger...

Another problem is one night i decided not to fast switch off windows while i was downloading, so i left my windows account open with my downloadings open and my instant messanger and turned off my monitor. Next morning i come back, turn on the monitor...and find both my downloads and instant messanger closed...

FINALLY - today, i was surfing the web normally, typing addresses etc...then all of a sudden - my windows shut down (crashed) and restarted back to my login window...

I dunno whats going on, i decided to post these problems just to see if someone has been experencing these problems or maybe someone has some helpful ideas for me to try to stop these problems...

For now, im gonna try again - leaving my windows account logged on with downloads and messanger open - see if it happens again...

can't really tell as of now what could have caused this to happen..
but i'd recommend to have a firewall on, change your Windows login password,
and you might also want to edit your Local Security Settings (Run -> secpol.msc) to enable auditing of account logon events and logon events, so that you can check in the Event Viewer/Security (eventvwr.msc) to see if anyone is attempting access to your PC.

I dont think its a hacker/virus problem... if thats that your thinking - think its a windows problem, conflicting with itself or a program...

and btw: it HAPPENED AGAIN!!!...computer just shutdown and restarted, didn't do the "Windows is Shutting Down, Saving Settings...blah blah blah, etc etc etc" It didn't do any of that - just wen't black - shut down, and restarted on its own back to Login Window...

...helppp

check your event log with start, run eventvwr. Look under system and see what errors/warnings are generated just before the shutdown..

Go into the System Properties (Run -> sysdm.cpl), Advanced, Startup and Recovery, click settings and uncheck in front of the Automatically restart in the System failure section,
if you get a BSOD, try getting all the info of the error message and code, then post the info.

Check this page http://aumha.org/win5/kbestop.php#0x0a for a possible cause of the stop error and might be a solution there.

read the whole section of the "0x0000000A: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL", and try to follow the General Troubleshooting of STOP Messages checklist, also check out the MS Knowledge base links you see on the page. be patient on this, give it more time and maybe you can stop the problem. what i would do is i'd just copy/paste the thing that i think it would help, but in this case i can't do that since there're alot of contains and things that need to be covered, so you should do the reading yourself.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Examine the “System” and “Application” logs in Event Viewer for other recent errors that might give further clues. To do this, launch EventVwr.msc from a Run box; or open “Administrative Tools” in the Control Panel then launch Event Viewer. (No Warning/Errors in Event Viewer say what is the cause of my problem)

2. If you’ve recently added new hardware, remove it and retest. (Did not install new hardware)

3. Run hardware diagnostics supplied by the manufacturer. (Nope)

4. Make sure device drivers and system BIOS are up-to-date. (Up-to-date)

5. However, if you’ve installed new drivers just before the problem appeared, try rolling them back to the older ones. (Did not install new drivers)

6. Open the box and make sure all hardware is correctly installed, well seated, and solidly connected. ( All hardware is installed correctly/connected)

7. Confirm that all of your hardware is on the Hardware Compatibility List. If some of it isn’t, then pay particular attention to the non-HCL hardware in your troubleshooting. (All hardware is the same, no recently installed hardware - all is compatible with each other)

8. Check for viruses. (No viruses/spyware)

9. Investigate recently added software. (might be a problem, don't know for sure though: Installed TuneUP Utilities 2004 and DAEMON Tools recently - problems started few days after installation)

10. Examine (and try disabling) BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. (My computer is a Dell Dimension 8100, the BIOS is very limited, don't think I can do this in my BIOS)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

"If you encounter this error while upgrading to a newer version of Windows, it might be caused by a device driver, a system service, a virus scanner, or a backup tool that is incompatible with the new version."

-I've been closing my anti-virus/firewall program recently to save resources while playing games. I run PC-cillin 2002, i close the program entirly, disable real-time scan, plus i got into task manager and end process to 'PCCClient.exe' - 'pccguide.exe' - and 'PCCPFW.exe'. Dunno if this caused my problem but it might be, im going to leave it on from now on and see if it changes anything...

that might be.

not sure if the Trend Micro Support Tool (PCCTool.exe) is available in the PC-cillin 2002 version. if it came with this version (check it out the tool would be in the program folder) i'd suggest you use the tool to properly shut down antivirus before playing the game.

'02 has pcctool.exe, but how do you use it to shut down the entire program and everything else related to Pc-cillin with this tool?

see the pic i posted in this - http://www.hardwareheaven.com/showthre...hlight=pcctool

go to Quit All Modules setthngs (no need to reboot).

or you can try using the Start up tab, and the settings tab then reboot.

check it out.

i'd also like you to consider upgrade the product, it all up to you, check it out later.. D/L a trial version of the Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2005
or 2004 version (not sure if this version is still obtainable.)
these two version are alot better than the one your are using.

nope you can't do it with the tool, it does not seems to have option to shutdown antivirus.
but i'm sure a newer version has it.

IF you want you can D/L the trial version of the Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2005.
then open/unpack the installer (not to install it, just open/extract it with Winrar) and to see if you can use the newer version of the PCCTool.exe,
it's a standalone program, and you might be able to use it.

...great...

yeah ok ill try that.

I havn't gotten the stop error lately, think the last time i got it was because i shut down all pc-cillin processes, im leaving them all on for now. If it happens again then that means it something else - I'll keep you informed on any changes.
