Should I use Windows XP 64bit Edition?

Anyone tried this, what are the benefits?

Dual Boot WinXP Pro & WinXP Pro 64bit v.1218

Well, I have a dual boot going with the latest public beta of WinXP Pro 64bit v.1218. For me everything was loaded ok, not drivers, but windows itself. There is a little bit of a speed boost, but without updated drivers for the 64bit OS it is slowed down with poor graphics and motherboard drivers.

ATIs graphic driver support for me is unusual though. ATI has released beta drivers, but none with the support of my ATI 8500. I did download a modified ATI beta 1 driver from *shiver* DNA. The installation was absolutely horrible, crashed and such. But it did extract the driver files that I needed, and I just did a manual update. The graphics after that seemed to be smoother but the second monitor did mess up every now and then.

My sound card is an Audigy 2 and Creative has some beta drivers released for it. But they will stop working on January 5, 2005. So in that sense it works fine.

Almost all of my motherboard peripherals were detected just fine (LAN, GigaLAN, USB, FireWire). My only problem was that I had to wait for Giga-Byte to release beta drivers for their ITE RAID controller. So that was really the only thing holding me back. I have 4 HD’s on the RAID but acting as a ATA, and my 4 CD-Rom drivers are plugged into the normal IDE ports.

I haven’t played around with it to much, but from a stability stand point, it’s been rock solid for me. I know that Winamp works fine, FireFox, ABC, hmm, can’t think of anymore. I’ll have reboot into it to see what else I have loaded.

I haven’t really experimented with games because of my graphics driver problem. They only game I did run however was Diablo II – Lord of Destruction. Whenever there was a lot of enemies around or effects with lava in the Pit of Despair (I think that’s the level) the FPS dropped a lot. Resulting in pausing and the game kind of skipping.

Anyway, if you need more info, I’ll be sure to try and help ya out.

Edit: Wrote this in Word and pasted it here but was Quad spaced.
