help with messenger software

ok, wondering if you guys can help: last week my windows messenger stopped working when i installed a newer version (the newest one - auto update). i tried uninstalling/reinstalling,etc. tried msn messenger with the same results. i figured it was something with the messenger software so i downloaded trillian - that doesn't work either. neither does aol. any idea whats going on? other programs are fine (online games, irc, etc. that use different ports), it doesn't work on/off my router, no proxy settings,etc. my accounts are fine because they work on another comp. windows xp. ??? at my wits end! any help appreciated

Hell of a problem there I have no idea how to help you but I will call a couple friends and see if the can halp.
