Windows Movie Maker 2 - Is There a Memory Leak?
Whenever I attempt to use Movie Maker 2 -- which I do enjoy using -- it starts eating up memory resources to a point that it will stop responding.
After I close it, I cannot open any other programs at all! None. I get error popups saying that there is not enough memory to open said program. So, I go to Start, Turn off computer and the only things showing are the radio buttons. There's not even the normal rectangular background behind them. So far, I haven't had another program do this. It happens even if I only open MM2 and don't even do any work. I just have to let it stay open a few minutes and the same thing happens. As an alternative, I've tried the Pinnacle Studio 8 that comes with the AiW cards. That ones even worse with all kinds of bugs, crashes, and so forth. MM2 would do just dandy for me if I could resolve this memory problem. Any clues? |

i've seen this problem before in Google groups, can't find it now.
see Alex Nichol post on this one http://groups-beta.google.com/group/...r+2+memory%26s he replied to the groups many time with the same messages. i'd try adding the max size of your pagefile, and see or until you see the warning stops. |

Yes, I've already checked several threads prior to posting here. It quite often has to do with DIVX files. But, I've taken care of that issue.
The one that is the real pain right now is that resource memory gets eaten up even without doing anything. Just having MM2 open creates problems after a couple of minutes and I can't even open anything else due to 'your system is low on memory' popup screens. |

at the time the problem occur.. in the task manager
any .exe with high CPU usage ? did you see the drwtsn32.exe in there ? and what was the .exe that the memory appears to grow consistently ? -- Last edited by Ctrl-Alt-Del; Jan 20, 2005 at 03:14 AM. |

I've resorted to doing a completely fresh install of Windows XP Home on a brand new SATA 160 GB drive.
We'll see what happens after I get things installed and back up to about where I was prior to this. Still have a lot of programs to install. BUT, I'll do some checking on MM2 as I go along. I've already installed SP2 and some other updates for drivers and such.

the program itself seems normal on my system..
![]() if the problem still persist after you did that, check other program that runs in background, or program running at the time as i mentioned above. |

I found out what was going on.
After encountering several random reboots both with MM2, a couple of other video editing programs, even a game or two, I decided to run MEMTEST86. At first it stop responding on the STRIDE6 test. This was with both sticks installed functioning as DUAL CHANNEL. One stick was in DIMM1 and the other in DIMM3. When the test stop working my first thought was bad memory. So, I pulled one stick out and ran the test. It finished without any problem or error at all. I then swapped the memory sticks and the test once again completed without error. So, I thought I might have a bad DIMM3 slot. So, I put one stick in there and ran the test again. And, again, no errors reported. Hmmmmm....... So, with both sticks passing, and each DIMM slot passing I decided to once again test with the DUAL CHANNEL mode. Tada! The board won't function with DUAL CHANNEL mode. I put the stick from DIMM3 into DIMM2 -- changing the mode from DUAL to SINGLE CHANNEL and Voila! It passed with flying colors! So, to really push this system, I copied 3 DVDs full of AVI files from the DVD to the HD. Then I Burned these to a new DVD using the UDF (Drag-to-Disc) program. Not one reboot or hesitation occured during all this operation. Then, I started up MM2 and imported several AVIs into the Collections. Again, not one hesitation or even a hiccup. 12 hours later, the computer was still functioning and hadn't rebooted on its own yet. Now for a question: Would you think that upping the memory voltage for Dual Channel would help any? Or could it be a flaw with the board itself? My thought is to suspect the board. Anyway, as long as the system functions well with Single Channel, everything I've read so far about Dual Channel indicates that it's not all it's cranked up to be. Maybe better implimentation down the road, but it's not producing that much increase in overall performance from what I've researched so far. Anyone else with some comments? |

if the system failure settings has not been set to use the Auto restart options, when you experienced those fatal system errors you should get a STOP message that occurs in Windows, and the cause of the STOP message then can be identified.
the provided info on the initial problems has made me think about the software problem only. which's usually associated with background running programs or a damage or mismatched driver if it's not the program itself. |

I've returned the faulty Mother.......board and have installed an ABIT IC7-G. This is a purely Intel-based board using a i875 Intel chipset.
Since changing out the motherboard and, once again, doing a clean install on a newly formatted HD, MM2 now works splendidly! |

i think the memory leak problem before was not because of the old board but the problem after the reformat is. don't you think? did you also have the memory leak problem i mean before you changed the board ?
anyway, i'm glad and good to hear you've got it fixed and for the new board too.

I believe the problem was mainly due to the VT-7 not working properly when I had it set to Dual Channel Memory. Changing it back to Single Channel made it work fine. I'm using Dual Channel mode on the new board and things are -- so far (knock on wood) -- working just great.
Besides the VT-7's problem with Dual Channel mode, it often would fail to reboot when I clicked the Restart button from Windows. The computer would restart, but the system would fail to regain video sync and keyboard/mouse connections. The retailer agreed it was the motherboard problem and agreed to let me return the board for a full refund. So, I think the problem with MM2 was due to a faulty motherboard from the gitgo. But, it's REALLY nice to have MM2 working like it should now. I'm once again able to browse through my movie clips and edit them quickly and accurately. |

in this situation the cause of the problem was not clear but you have done a process of trial and error troubleshooting and you made it. and again i'm glad to hear that it's all good and you're happy.

After a few days with troublefree experience, it's nice to report that the program is working fine.
