How do I restore the Windows XP default IDE driver?

It seems that uninstalling my nForce platform drivers has resulted in complete disaster. Every time my computer starts up, I'm faced with a black screen giving me the option to Start Windows as usual, Start Windows with last known good configuration, or Start Windows in Safe Mode. Neither of these options work! Whichever I choose results in the computer restarting all over again and prompting me with the same black screen.

I'm relatively sure this has something to do with the fact that, along with the rest of the nForce drivers, the IDE driver has gone bye-bye due to my uninstall. So far I've tried copying the nForce drivers manually into "C:\WINDOWS\system32" and "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers" through the Recovery Console, but to no avail. I haven't had any luck with a few repair installations of Windows either.

My question to you is: How can I go about restoring the default Windows XP system drivers, namely the IDE driver? I figured a repair install might do it, but apparently not. From where I stand now, I can access the files on my Windows partition is through the Windows XP installation disc's Recovery Console. All I need to know is a) Which files to copy, and b) Where to copy them to.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I dread having to do a fresh install of Windows XP.

I have heard that chipset drivers are leave a system very problematic once removed..i always over-write my chipset drivers as opposed to removing them.

I'm not certain but it looks as though you're best of format and a reinstall is the fix,if a windows repair has not worked.

May try to go in safe mode (F8 on boot) and uninstall the primary & secondary ide drivers via
left click on my computer > hardware > device manager > IDE Atapicontrollers
after restart it should install the MS drivers if it can't find the NV ones,
not sure though, couse I never install the NV ones, MS ones are still better

have you tried the obvious? go into Device Manager, open the IDE controller and choose properties then driver. Once there try roll back driver, it should remove the nvidia one and default to the original XP driver

by using the Add/Remove... i think, you have made a wrong move.
i'm not sure atm what causes this startup problem...

Has anyone who has replied to this thread so far actually read my first post? If you did, I think it would be obvious to you that I am unable to get into Windows. All I have available to me is the Recovery Console. I'm beginning to think everyone is just replying with prewritten responses to general questions.

And for the tenth time, repairs installs aren't working.

Unfortunately, my problem doesn't fall into one of these categories. I appreciate the help though.

Can anyone tell me the filename of the default Windows XP IDE driver and what folder it's supposed to be in (i.e. C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers)? If I knew this information, I think I might be able to fix my problem.

I just think you not understanding what I'm speaking of..... it works.... asumeing XP workable when it was 1st installed on you PC

...

you boot to the XP cd itself...
you choose install , as if you didn't have windows
NOT recovery or anything like that...

then it will ask it you something like to do a repair install....
it installs windows ontop of it self you loose nothing.....
other then XP is reinstalled all of your programs and data intact

your other option?

you can format the drive (delete all data) and start with a fresh run of windows xp..... and start from scratch

You'll need a tool like this one if you can't boot into Windows at all and you can't fix it via the repair CD... or just do what Neon said

This is exactly what I've done about a dozen times now - I do have a brain, you know

@Ctrl-Alt-Del: I'll go ahead and look into the link you provided about recovering from a corrupted registry.

If all else fails, I'll see about getting a copyof this Administrator's Pak software.

A Repair Install is not foolproof, and should not be considered the cure-all fix for non-boot situations.
A Repair Install will replace the system files with the files on the XP CD used for the Repair Install.

that's why i think the problem is not with the missing files...
a service/a device driver or the registry damage that prevents Windows from Starting ??

the problem i can think of atm is you already have repaired the Windows and the backup/repair registries may have already been changed because of that. and this's why i told you that it can screw things up even more...

At the risk of giving you advice that you've already gotten (I see that upsets you to no end ;p), I think if you're going through all this trouble and nothings working that you should just get another computer, put your hdd in their computer, boot into their OS and get your files off then just reformat. I don't know, this may not be a viable solution, but perhaps the best because it'll take care of any other bad entries into the registry or whatever happened from bogging down your computer.

why is this happening i'm not sure, but to prevent it i'd say use either the roll back or the update driver in the Device Manager before using the Add/Remove... might prevent it from happening like this. never have this problem so can't tell for sure. i think, the roll back does not remove the other drivers and you can still change it over at later time.

Well, I've just about given up. I've tried just about everything I can, but still no luck. I suppose it's time to call it quits and go with a complete reinstall of Windows. It's rather frustrating, considering how long this installation of Windows had lasted me. I'll just copy all my important data to my second hard drive, write down a list of the programs I had installed, and then go ahead and format.

Anyway, I'd like to thank all of you for being patient with me and trying to help me out. Trust me, I really appreciate it. I'll just take this as a lesson learned and do everything I can to prevent it from happening again.
