Your CD drive has probably switched to PIO mode
To fix this, go to the device manager, open the "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" group and open the Primary and Secondary Channels. If you see a device in "PIO Mode" instead of "DMA mode" then it's probably your CD-Recorder. This is seen more rarely with SP2, but it's still around. To fix it, remove the channel where you see the device in PIO mode and restart. Upon restart, it should be back to DMA mode. Note that in order to remove the IDE channel, you need to uninstall first any software that has installed a virtual drive on your PC (Alcohol, Daemon Tools, CloneCD etc) Microsoft recommends this solution too: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=817472 but there's another one as well, besides uninstalling the channel: http://www.michna.com/kb/WxDMA.htm Quote:

burning is fairly CPU intensive, but yea, it shouldn't be that high. Try what md5 said, and if that doesn't help...re-install nero.

just something to add which is more than likely not the case --- however , in running processes is it nero that is hogging all the CPU time? you said you had a browser running (with a few other apps), ive seen sites running flash eat quite a bit of CPU time.

both primary and secondary channels were in DMA mode.
that first microsoft link just tells ya to get the latest service pack... im to to enthusiastic about uninstallng any devices, had problems in the past and want to stay clear of that option. The nero 6 i got is just the stock version with no updates, because when i updated it last time it came up with errors half way through burning dvds and cd, i uninstalled the whole package, and updated agaain with just the 2 packeges instead or the 4 the nero has, and still it came up with errors when burning, so after 5 wasted dvd's. I uninstalled it again and just stayed with the stock package from the cd i got with my dvd drive. Personally i dont want to update the software because it gives me nothing but trouble, and its working fine now when i burn using dvd decrypter, but when burning media files to dvd thats when i get the problem of 100% cpu usage. Next time i burn one which is soon, ill close all programs and see what happenes, it sucks cause to burn a full dvd it takes like 4 hrs.... (onlt bout 1 when burning dvd files decyrpted)

That's strange... have you double checked that all devices hooked on the channels are in DMA mode? (each channel has up to 2 devices)
That's the only logical explanation I can think of... I've never had problems with high CPU ulitization with Nero itself |

Didn't you check here to see what exactly was using the CPU cycles?
Maybe it was Explorer or something else? Nero has never ever used that much for me. But I always make sure to shut everything down on the rare occasion I burn a CD. ![]() Quote:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...187/system.jpg I would say you need to shut some things down especially when burning... Or double up on your physical ram! Answer- yes that is normal when trying to burn a DVD while you are exceeding you physical ram and the HD is getting paged.

also as described in a earlier post this only happens when burnig downloaded media, and dosnt happen when burning decrypeted files. (mabye this is a more intensive process?)

my startup programs have been edited so that only what is necessary is in the menu.
Upon reboot my page file usage was 299mb. Even while my comp is idle is still jumping up and down in the cpu usage from 0-30%. With only fire fox and tsk manager running. (no spyware or adware) Under virtual memory my total page file size is set to 766mb with a recommended 765mb. Paging file size for c: is under the system managed size, should i set a different amount to get better performance? i got 136gig of free space

yous eem to have a big harddrive, so try this. Fire up partition magic, create a 2GB partition at the end of the hard drive, and set that to be your page file, with "windows managed" size. My guess is that windows is tryign to page to the same "drive"(partition) as nero si trying to pull data off of and this is causing some serious slow downs. And, FYI, page file should be about 2x your RAM, unless you have atleast a gig of RAM.
Also, give the new nero updates a shot, they work great, and may help your problem out a bit. (version 6.6, I think) My page file and stuff:

Best thing you could do is get another 512mb stick of ram. When you have 690mb PF usage and only 512mb of physical ram, while burning a DVD, you will have huge slowdowns. Stick another 512mb of ram in the machine and you won't have those slowdowns.

Best thing to do it for are limited to 512mb physical ram is to simply shut down ALL programs that you are not using, then burn the DVD or whatever. Keep an eye on PF usage, and make sure it doesn't go above 512mb, or you will get huge slowdowns. I lived with 512mb for a long long time and managed ok..

nothing seems to work,
i allocated c: as a system managed page file and E: as the same... burned a dvd and still at 100% cpu usage Then removed the C: pagefile to no paging file and just allocated the E: as system managed size. burned a dvd and still 100% cpu usage. (no other programs running) ![]() i think ill have to bite the bullet and just wait til i can afford to get extra memory ![]() ![]()

Question:
Does C: need to have a page file or can i run the page file from both drives of E:? i just allocated 1800 mb of E: to be a page file, is this all i need to do or should put C:'s pagefile back to system managed?

You might want to get rid of some of the processes in there
e.g. backweb is a spyware from Logitech: http://www.pestpatrol.com/PestInfo/B/Backweb.asp http://miataru.computing.net/securit...orum/8674.html Get rid of all these: cidaemon.exe wweb32.exe EM_EXEC.exe EasyShare.exe solidcapture.exe TeaTimer.exe IDMain.exe jsched.exe SMax4.exe SMax4PNP.exe winampa.exe AsusProb.exe Ideally, you should have only the following running: crss.exe explorer.exe lsass.exe services.exe smss.exe spoolsv.exe svchost.exe (all instances) System System Idle Process taskmgr (to see what's going on )winlogon.exe Try having only the above processes running on your system, start Nero and try again Get this nice freeware utility too, it will help you clear-up your system startup list: http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

Have you managed to isolate the process that caused the high CPU load?

Move the Paging File
---------- If disk space on your boot volume is limited, you can achieve better performance by moving the paging file to another volume. However, you might want to leave a smaller paging file on the boot volume and maintain a larger file on different volume with more capacity for the sake of recoverability. Depending on how you have configured your system’s startup and recovery options, the configuration might require that you maintain a paging file of a certain size on the boot volume. Therefore, make sure to consider your startup and recovery settings when planning to move the paging file. |

I used to run my main paging file on it's own partition and have smaller paging files on all the other partitions, but it didn't seem to do anything so I put it all on the same separate partition. Can't wait to get another fast HD.
