The last couple days, my PC has started taking alot longer than normal to reboot, and I am not sure why. It shuts down really quick and starts to load up very fast, (the moving bar under the windows logo at boot up goes across a little bit less than 2x), then I start to hang up right before the desktop loads. I get like a blank blue desktop screen w/ a cursor on it and it hangs up there for 40 seconds before the desktop w/ my wallpaper and all loads up. So far I have

1. Ran checkdisk from windows
2. defragmented both online and offline w/ perfect disk
3. ran a registry cleaner (regsupreme)
4. I used Driver Heavens TuneXP to rearrange bootfiles for quicker bootup
5. went through all of my services through administrative tools

I dont know what else to try I am open for any suggestions

are you useing a antivirus and firewall app.namely anything NORTON?if so then disable both then try to boot and see what happens.if not then check what items are starting with windows and go from there.also scan for adware and spyware and viruses.and i hope that you didnt just delete everything that your reg cleaner said was invalid,if you did there could be some serious issues comeing up.good luck

I do have an antivirus, but I had it before I started having this problem. Going to try optimize w/ bootvis and see what happens. I also noticed my windows prefetch folder is gone. SO I created another one. Not sure if that has anything do do w/ it or not.

im not sure how bootvis works but if your prefetch folder was gone then most likely there are more serious issues ahead.i would save all important data then mess arround and see what caused your issue then do some serious tweaking and ocing where you dont have to worry about messing up windows.then document everything that works or improves your os.then when all else fails vape your drive and start from scratch.this is how we all learn,sometimes a messed up install is just what the doctor ordered.good luck

thanks for trying to help, I think i got it fixed.......I went through my services again w/ a fine toothed comb and shut off a few more things and all is good now. I think that I did a prefetch tweak before where I disabled it, but I am not sure why the folder was totally gone. I should try turning it back on and see what happens.

I dont know much about bootvis except it traces your startup and how long it takes. There is also an optimize thing but that didnt seem to make much difference for me. After I shut off a few more of the services here are my new boot vis #'s

video 3.32s

these are the things that Windows do (will do) after the computer boot past the BIOS POST and at the boot up screen where you see the progress bar..

1) Loads device drivers marked to load at boot time (drivers for the specific machine)
2) Prefetching
3) Reads the registry and initialize the page file
4) Sets the display mode for the final resolution and refresh rate

stages of the progress bar screen are done.

the Prefetching time is the longest time where Windows spends (on most system),

when you remove all of the files in Prefetch folder you 'will' see the progress bar goes real fast,
atleast it's what it seems to be.. this can be tested on any Windows XP system..
let i say/use on most system.

try removing all of the files in Prefetch folder and reboot your PC,
you 'will' see that the progress bar boot screen goes faster than before..
the progress bar used to be 4-6 times before, now you will see 1-2 times.

BUT, the overall (the whole amount) boot time-- starting from clicking the Restart in Windows or pressing the power switch to a useable state again will be 'increased'.

as for the simple reason for this..
let see what the Prefetching do...
"Prefetching time is the time spent reading pages in from disk used later as devices initialize, and Winlogon, services, the shell, and other applications start during boot."

no Prefetching system on the XP,
causing the slowdown on the next stage of the Windows boot-up which is when the Windows starts Winlogon, services, the shell, and so on... untill you see the desktop and your XP is at a useable state.

Prefetching is the new XP 'Memory Management'..
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\..
Not only the boot time or program launch time.. it can add or cut down the overall syetem performance.

If you think the XP's Prefetching does not help anything-- why not turn it off.
you can do this via a simple registry hacks-- you can even turn off the Task Scheduler service completely, if you decide not to use the XP's Prefetching system.
let's the XP do it things (including registry and prefetching)...
you can push it and expected to see an improvement within a short period of time if you know how to do it,
otherwz you won't see any improve within a day or two.
