Of choice, its Linux
Of necessity, its Windows (2K or XP - not fussy) for my games :/

Linux is terrible i completly hate it, i feel sick when it loads but the DAMN profeesors at my university forces us to use linux for coding... but often i just write the code at home in Windows 2000 and bring it there =)

Linux (or *BSD for that matter) is the premier system for learning to program as there is so much source code publically available for doing pretty much everything from the simple "Hello World" to making a feature rich internet browser (ala Mozilla).
With all that source to hand, it is any wonder WHY they use it? Also, saving money in expensive licencing deals (with M$ in a school/uni EVERY computer has to be licenced for Windows, even if its a Mac or Sun SPARC workstation. Don't believe me then check it out) means that they have more money to spend on the important things - like teachers, better equipment and facilities.

XP... stable, beautiful (which you can disable, or change), tweakable, fast, and cheap

To tell you the truth... there is one operating system that I really miss... OS/2 WARP... and OS/2 WARP Pro.
I wish that IBM would start to redistribute that. But alas, Microshaft put an end to that.

Hey, no AmigaDOS? Pisses all over windoooze crap.
Or DOS - c'mon guys, thought we were hardcore enthusiasts. I could make DOS scream. No need for much more than a 40Mhz CPU and 4mb RAM (hell, even a 386DX!) Amateurs use a GUI ;-) Guess it has to be Linux then, and maybe a windooze for games

Im in the same boat as most
Id prefer Linux if it could get all the features and ease of use right For now MS has that in their court (Not to mention the fact that games just work better on Windows for the time being) If a company with a Linux distro can ever get it on par with Windows u know where I'll be headed

you may "know" your win xp system "inside and out" , but that doesn't compare to the
luxery of absolutely open source, in knowing your operating system it can't be denied that being closed source is a huge burden in your quest for customization! sure regedit.com is very helpful, as well as replacing windows explorer with something interesting like lightstep. but you can't change the overall manner in which your system is layed out or how it performs. customization in linux is indefintely possible, if you want to take the table scrapes of customization from micro$oft (and pay $$$ for it!!!) or try to reverse engineer and create circle 0 (root privilage) services to override system layout, when there is a whole movement of people who you could join in a quest for your own perfect computing experience and do so at no cost and under no legal duress. daniel |
