MS Forced upgrade to SP2
FYI, Not sure if anyone has heard of this yet
http://www.aunty-spam.com/resistance...-sp1-machines/ April 12th is the very last day. That’s when the clock runs, and the deadline looms. And here you thought it was April 15th. Nope, it’s the twelfth. Because we’re not talking about the day your taxes are due. On no. We’re talking about the day that your Windows XP or Windows XP SP1 computer will be automatically updated to XP SP2 (Service Pack 2) whether you want it to or not. Period. And here you thought that you owned your computer and the contents thereon, and could do whatever you wanted with it, and could choose what would, and what wouldn’t, be installed on it. Wrong. Up until now users who did not want to accept the SP2 update had the option of temporarily blocking the update from being downloaded to their machines through the Automatic or Windows Update mechanisms, however that option expires on April 12th. According to Microsoft’s latest alert on the issue, “The intent of this alert is to provide you with a reminder about the upcoming deadline around the date on which Automatic Update (AU) and Windows Update (WU) will deliver Windows XP SP2 regardless of the presence of the blocking mechanism.” Now, Aunty isn’t saying that you shouldn’t update to SP2 - indeed, you should, as it fixes many serious security holes. But there is something about removing the element of choice in how a consumer uses a personal product for which they paid which just doesn’t sit well.

I can't really pick sides.... it's kinda like getting vacinated for a fatal disease and refusing while putting everyone else at risk as reguardless of being vacinated or not... it's still contagous is someone gets it...
I could compare it to just about anything make it a realistic nessesity, and really... WHY wouldn't you update to SP2? What is so terrible about it.. .any new features that are in it can be easily disabled.... slipstreaming is easy and guides are all over the net. I respect anyones decision to update or not. It's thier choice.... but apparently MS doesn't want to be held responcible for something they tried to provide a fix for.

That's the first time I've heard of this. The only reason I can think that cheats aren't working is DEP, but it can be disabled
I don't agree with Microsoft *forcing* people to upgrade. I mean, there are so many people with a 56k modem out there - what about them? SP2 is around 250MB - a hefty download for people with dial-up

the automatic update when enabled works very well with dial-up... my 28.8k dialup slowly downloaded SP2 very well.. within 3-5 days of using the net and knowing it was downloading... it was completed....

The people complaining the most are pirates or people who will take any reason to complain about microsoft.
Open up and let sp2 slide in, it's a gentle lover.

I have no real problem with this, anyone who has a good reason to not update can probably figure out a way around it anyway.
The download is much less than the network install when done through the automatic update, less than 100MB IIRC.

I still don't have SP2... anyway to work around this?
Maybe crack the automatic update software.

i use a dial-up but i got the full XPSP2--266 MB one on the 2nd day after MS released it, that was from a friend who has a fast net connection who do the download for me. but i think anyone can get the file either from a friend, an internet cafe, etc. and then you can have the file for the future use.
as for the rest of the updates and other patches for IE6 after the SP2, at first i had enabled the Auto Update to see if it would worked under my connection but it didn't work well at all, i also do need the patchs files to be on my local drive so i can patch other XPs offline, having the files available locally as many as i can so that i don't have to re-download these patches but if there's an update version from MS then i'll update my files and logs. so what i do now is to have a reminder that tells me not to forget to visit the WU site at every 5 days, it was set at 3 days at the earlier time, now i've extended it, and let the site do an express scan on my system. unless i heard any WU news before the scheduled then i'd visit the WU site at asap and get the file, if i could not get it then i'll do an online install. and, as i know this is not at best at all for having an up-to-date system with my own rules and way of doing it. but if i'll have to use a fast net connection, then at that time i'll let MS helps me do this part of automating computing task and keeps my internet PC updates at all time or at as much and fast as possible. at least i think it's the best and right way to do it. esp, for a PC user who likes to do an automated computing tasks like myself. one other thing that i've been doing for so long now is not to allow the generic host process for win32 services to act as a server and making an connection at all time but to let it make the needed connection during the WU only and only allow it to act as a client. and this when my internet PC is a stand alone and using a dial-up modem connection. i'm not sure about others types of connection. Quote:
but, as i mentioned earlier on the part of the 56K users, they can still get the SP2 file without having to download it with their slow connection. but yet, i don't understand at all why any 'home user' would refuse to install or use SP2 on their PC system. the Windows is not just another software, it's an OS, PC user knows that. keep the OS at the up-to-date level is a must. i've seen some messages from XP users at over some news groups that says something likes they were afraid that their XPs might be broke after applying the SP2, and this becos they heard bad news about it, friends told them or saw on an article. well i'd say they've not tried it yet, try it and if there's any problem then IMO, if they wants to keep using XP they just will have to remove or don't use or replaces any 3rd party softwares that causes the problem, or replaces their hardwares that that was not working with XPSP2. otherwise, don't use the XP. that's about it. i think. -- Last edited by Ctrl-Alt-Del; Feb 24, 2005 at 07:03 AM. |

They aren't forcing it upon anyone. All they are doing is refusing to patch anything older than SP2, which is perfectly OK by me...it's their code, not mine.

"I still don't have SP2... anyway to work around this? Maybe crack the automatic update software."
- Disable the Automatic Updates service, Background Intelligent Transfer Service and Cryptographic Services. You can also order a cd with sp2 from MS for free. For anyone who cares these are all the critical updates not directly related to .Net released since SP2 for XP: WindowsXP-KB867282-x86-ENU.exe WindowsXP-KB873333-x86-ENU.exe WindowsXP-KB873339-x86-ENU.exe WindowsXP-KB885250-x86-ENU.exe WindowsXP-KB885835-x86-ENU.exe WindowsXP-KB885836-x86-ENU.exe WindowsXP-KB886185-x86-enu.exe WindowsXP-KB888113-x86-ENU.exe WindowsXP-KB888302-x86-ENU.exe WindowsXP-KB890047-X86-ENU.exe WindowsXP-KB890175-x86-ENU.exe WindowsXP-KB891781-x86-ENU.exe

" for the original poster, if you don't see the SP2 when visiting the WU site... then check this page out.. Windows XP Service Pack 2 Problem Solver http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm#C...Service_Pack_2 scroll down the page to section 'Service Pack 2 is not offered on the Windows Update web site' |

Those 3 are all covered by the cumulative security update I have listed in there.
KB887742 is a patch for .Net SP1, so I didn't include it.

KB834707 MS04-038: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer http://support.microsoft.com/kb/834707 Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (SP1) hotfixes that were released after Microsoft security bulletin MS04-004 may not be included in the 834707 security update that is documented in Microsoft security bulletin MS04-038. Update 829165, update 831923, update 812989, update 813503, and update 873346 are included in all the 834707 security update packages. KB885932 Internet Explorer stops responding or crashes, and you receive an access violation in Vgx.dll, when you view a Web page in Internet Explorer 6.0 http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;885932 KB888240 Some add-ons are not listed in the Manage Add-ons dialog box in Internet Explorer on your Windows XP Service Pack 2-based computer http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;888240 -- the .Net 1.1 sp1 updates was the KB886903 (not KB887742) KB887742 You receive the Stop error "Stop 0x05 (INVALID_PROCESS_ATTACH_ATTEMPT)" in Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Windows Server 2003 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/887742 ![]() you may 'not' need all of these to be patched on your system. what i did was i might patch some of it first then visit the WU site for a scan, to see if any of the patch files was needed for the system, then i install the one that i already have and then re-visit the site for another system check ups. the one for the internet uses must be at up-to-date level as much as i can and possible. the rest will be at every 30 days. if you have a fast connection you won't need to keep track of how well your system is by yourself, i mean like i do, really. let's the Auto update do the work, i never have a chance to see how well it can/will do the job, but, i think it should do it well. |

IMO, only way to do a good install of SP2 is slipstream, if not, fresh format and install... apon completion and before installing any chipset or graphic or any kind of drivers.. install the network version of SP2..... apon completeing the reboot.... defrag and reboot again to make sure everything is peach.. continue with installing your drivers and you should have the most reliable machine with SP2 working....
I still suggest that SP2 slipstream is the best thing you could possibly ever do....

Bleh, I got 887742 mixed up with an other one.
md5: Comparing to your list, I don't have the following: Q282784: Didn't bother installing qfecheck. KB885884: I don't have Office. KB885932: "Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem." I only use IE for compatibility testing, so I wouldn't notice the problem anyway KB887797: Don't have outlook express on my system. I dumped some notes in a text file so that I wouldn't forget why I didn't have these. It's good to see I'm not missing any.

There are good reasons not to want to install the service pack if you are one of the unlucky ones who use software that was "broken" by the update. My son's favorite game was Freedom Force, which would not run under SP2. It wasn't until this week that Irrational Games finally issued a patch to fix it. There are other programs that do not work in SP2, so before you install it you might want to check out whether you'll need updates to other software afterwards. A number of firewall and anti-virus applications require updates to work.

Now that you mention it...
KB811113 is SP2 RC1 Strange indeed, it shouldn't be there. Maybe it's there because I installed SP2 final over the RC version . Windows seems to be reporting the correct version: ![]() And yes, I've got a file named KB888113.log in my windows folder Weird...
