hello i can't accsess and shared files or directories althought ics works i tried disabeling the firewall and on both pcs i typed the same workgroup (i tried to run the network wizard a million times (1 pc gets 192.168.0.1 and the other get's 192.168.0.250 so it's suppose to work ok) i even tried to give them an ip manually didnt help it just disabled the ics,when i tried to enter my workgroup in one pc i saw it's own shared dirs and on the other pc the workgroup was empty help will be much appreciated, any suggestion?
oh btw i have xp sp1 on both

First, make sure that their computer name, and computer descriptions a different from each other.

Second, even if you give them the same IP you also need to make sure they have the same Subnet Mask (usually 255.255.255.0), and the same gateway address (whateve the address your router is). Using DHCP though is your best bet though.

Third, you might want to try loading (installing) a protocol called IPX (it will show up as 'NWlink IPX' in MS's protocols section for each adapter. It might help to install it, or it may not.

Question: Are your computers wired or wireless to your router? Are they mixed wired/wireless?

yes i checked all that altought i left the getaway empty.....
and the computer are not connected thru a router it's nic to nic....
(if i had a router i wouldn't have needed the ics)

If you're sharing files, both computers (the server and the client) need to have 2 identical user accounts. The easiest way to go would be to enable the guest account on both PCs. Microsoft has a good article about sharing here. Have a look at it, especially the troubleshooting section

turned pn guest accounts on both pcs didnt help i'll try reading those articles though im pretty pessimistic of how much they will hell cause iv read like of like those that didnt help

ditto. your computer has to authenticate each user. It's like going to a club and being on the VIP list. If you're not on the list, you ain't getting into the club.

edit: you posted right be for me. just use the same username and password first. see if that solves the problem.

NIC to NIC? Are you using cross-over cable, or are you trying to use the standard enternet cable? Just asking cuz if you are trying to use standard ethernet cable it won't work at all. You will need cross-over cable to do this. Essentially 2 wires are reversed on each end so that data is sent on one end, recieved on the other end, and vice versa.

actually it's 4 wires (2 pairs) that are crossed. You're using EIA/TIA586A on one side and EIA/TIA586B on the other.

ICS DHCP uses 192.168.0.1 for the host and starts with 192.168.0.2 for the clients. how did you get 192.168.0.250? did you set a static ip?

ICS sucks, and the amount of time you will spend tweaking it is not worth the results. Are you trying to share a dialup connection? If not, BUY A ROUTER.

yes im using a crossed cable i had this network for along time and as i satated windows dhcp gave the ip 129.168.0.250 and i stated i tired to give it 192.168.0.2 i tired (i already had a network i just got a new pc so i formated both pc and never got so much trouble usally i would just have premission problem that i would fix by the guest account now i can't even see the pther computer)
p.s. if it wasn't a crossed cable the inertnet connect sharing wouldn't have worked..

Um.. ok.. I'm glad to know you are using crossover cable. It's now another thing I didn't know before. I've learned never to make assumptions about anything. Not about what people have tried, what their level of pc knowledge is, nor what hardware they have. That's why I'm going by what you're posting, and I'm in turn posting questions and suggestions that might lead you and others/myself to an answer. It's all about process of elimination. I understand your frustrated with this, but if you could, please be a little patient with this. We're all trying to help you out.

That said, you can try the following if you like. First, try disabling, then re-enabling your nics. Try this while both machine are on. This will reset the network. Second, you can also try to remove, then reinstall File and Printer Sharing from both machines. Also, you haven't mentioned if you tried installing the IPX protocol as I suggested earlier? As well, just to clarify something, can you ping the other system by using the ping command from a dos prompt? (ping 192.168.0.1/192.168.0.250?) Thirdly, you've stated your using ICS. (about to break my rule) Assuming you have 2 nics in 1 system so that you can get the other PC on the internet, have you tried using that nic to setup the pc to pc connection? Have you tried uninstalling the nic that is hooked up to the internet, and tried to resetup the workgroup? That way Windows is forced to setup the sharing with those 2 pcs first. Then you just have to add the 2nd nic back into the PC, and setup ICS as usual.

Other than that all I can suggest for now is spending the $30, and buy a router. That's all I can suggest at the moment, unless someone else has a suggestion.

ok here goes

Both machines need to have the ip details set manually and on the same subnet,

An example of this would be as follows.

PC1

IP: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.0.2


PC2:
IP: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.0.1


It needs to be set to this as the gateway IP is the IP Address that the computer connects to .

So all you are doing here is telling each machine to connect to the other machines IP address.

The windows network wizard is a pain in the ass and often sets things up wrong - ignore it

Make sure you have file sharing enabled on the machine whos files you want to share, and then set up the shares in the folder persmissions of those folders you want the other machine to have access to.

Both PC need file shareing turned on and and firewalls properly configured or turned off!
Also tyou need to set up folders / files to share or you won't see nothing!

i've only ran into this when i formated and installed as well.. i worked on it for days and finally gave up and reformatted and reinstalled again..... i think thier was a strange problem in the first reinstallation or something.. it appeared fine. but for the love of guad.. i couldn't get either machine to connect to each other..
