Reformating XP

Hey guys/ladies,
My brothers Compaq has been bogged down forever with crap galore.
I told him I would reformat his computer for him.
I was just wondering if anyone had a website or a detailed description on how to do it?
I know that his Compaq did not come with the XP Home CD, but a Compaq Recovery CD.

Thanks for any input.

Boot to the XP CD and follow the on screen instructions basically. when in there, dont repair it, just delete the partition, make a new one or two etc, and follow the on screen instructions Here is a real good guide to help you optimise the system, it also explains a lot and helps you learn what is going on, it is a good read, http://www.tweakguides.com/XPTC.html

also, make sure you have whatever drivers you might need as XP doesn't have all the drivers to every system, you can probably get them from the COmpaq website.

You can autostream that compaq cd with xp sp2

with neowin autostreamer should be easy for you. My 1700 posted

Well I just got back from my brothers house and was taking a look at his computer.
They didnt even give him a Recovery CD. Nothing at all, Im not sure how I'm going to reformat his machine now.

Plus my computer seems to be bugging up lately, not serious, but my games are still running worse than a few weeks ago, so I'm thinking about reformatting my machine.
Would I have to install my Motherboards drivers? They are on a floppy disk, and I dont have a floppy drive on my machine. LOL

You can probably get the drivers for both your brothers and your system off the net. You should be able to do this after you install XP, it just saves time to have that stuff before. My advice, get on the internet, download all the drivers you need, burn them to a CD, reformat, and then follow the XP Tweaking Companion I posted above. You shouldnt have any problems finding the drivers for your systems at the manufacturers site.

thanks Vikingod, I have most of my drivers on a CD, its just that my brother doesnt have a XP copy at all!
So I cant even reformat his machine! Hes got all his drivers that he needs, but no XP CD.
Not sure what to do.

And if I reformat, I will install the Omega drivers instead of the Catalyst. Sound good?
I hear mixed reviews on these two.

I love the Omega's, been using them a while on my comp. I might suggest the 4.12's of his, they work the best for me.
ps. if you have a retail copy of XP, it should install just fine on your bros machine, but that is all i can say...

Well I was going to try my XP CD, but will that work. If he goes to update will Microsoft not know?
