Make sure he's booting up on the installation disc instead of starting the installation from within WinXP, wich is not a good idea in general.

If he is trying to delete a partition, use a wn98 or ME boot disk- and Fdisk. Format C

the reason he got this error could be bacause he was trying to run the Windows setup from within the existing Windows system like Mkk said, tell him to reset the computer Bios to boot from CD before HDD, then try booting from the XP CD direct, after entering setup select New Install and then select and Delete the current XP partition, create a new one, this new partition will be formatted next and the setup program will continue on installing and setting up the XP.

if he cannot Select the current partition to be deleted, tell him to do this after the F8 (to accept the license agreement) and entering the New Install, at the point when the setup program asks him for a partiton that he would want the Windows to be installed, try hitting the Esc key and see if he would get a chance to select and delete that partition.

Evil... I'm sure you've installed windows a few times.... if this is his first time.. and if he's having troubles.. which he is..... you should be thier to help walk him through it (DON'T DO IT FOR HIM)
this will ensure that he does it right, and doesn't get a bad habit of doing something wrong....

^good advice. Other than that, ctrlaltdelete has nailed everything.
