Problem with 640x480 quicktime files in mpeg4

For some reason, all the 640x480 quicktime files I download from IGN.com play choppy, although the 320x240 videos play fine. When IGN encoded their files with Sorenson, they played fine. They didn't get choppy until they started using mpeg4. I don't know if it's my computer that is having problems or the way IGN is encoding their videos. I have a laptop with a 1.0 Ghz Athlon and 512MB RAM running WinXP Pro. Anyone know if there is a problem with quicktime's mpeg4 playback with 640x480 videos? I've optimized my computer like a mad man to try and fix this and nothing is helping.
