Backup and Restore Your OE Mail, News and Settings

if you only move the message or the databases to a new folder, then that's not a complete backup. you know?

anyway, just want to make sure you understand how to load the old XP's NTUSER.DAT
into the Registry Editor for editing, in this case you want to export some registry keys from the NTUSER.DAT file.

from a working XP open the Registry Editor, then click on the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE key and go to File ->Load Hive, browse to locate the NTUSER.DAT in the corrupted XP, then assign a name to the hive, for example "TemporaryKey".

now, the registry key named TemporaryKey will be loaded under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE key, just expand the key and get whatever you want from it,
when you're done with it, click on the TemporaryKey key and unload it--File ->Unload Hive. goodluck.
Yes it is the same kind of article, no I haven't saved the registry entries from the old corrupt install yet- If I can do that successfully I will be able to save my settings.. It's just stuff I have never had to do before (accessing registry entries from a corrupt or non accessible windows install)

Its only a a few keys, hopefully I can do it.. Thanks for those other links, I will see if I can do it.

Just getting around to trying this- for some reason the "load hive" is grayed out? I wonder why?

i thought i made things clear on my last post as much as necessary for you to use the MS Windows Registry Editor (regedit.exe).

when/if you CAN access the corrupted XP (non- bootable XP) drive or partition,
then the Registry Editor can do it all. best to first try using it.

the others two choices-- the boot CDs that i mentioned on post #29 are the second, alternative option. you'll have to use one of those if you cannot access the corrupted XP.

you may not know that whatever methods you use, the NTUSER.DAT file will need to be loaded in order for you to get the Registration Entries off the HKEY_LOCAL_USER key.

it is GRAY'ed out.... I can't click it-

I checked my permissions and I am admin and permissions set to full.. I don't see why it would be gray.

show me a couple pic of the regedit.exe.

1) start regedit at Home position
2) click on the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE key and go to File ->Load Hive.

make the pics small, i'm using very slow internet connection.

I don't even have Photoshop loaded yet- I am working on setting up one OE identity right now..

I will show you a pic as soon as I can

EDIT- I see- I was on local_user that was grayed out- If I am on local_machine it is not grayed out.. So I see what the problem is..

The only thing I really want to import from the old registry is the message RULES.... that is it really- All the other stuff I can just import via the files.

I see that if I change the storage folder to the one I was using before all the folders are all loaded up and everything. I can set up everything else manually very easily, except the message rules.

So that's all I need. And if I can do that, I will be all set..
I think I am going to rebuild all the other identities manually to avoid confusion, since they are not labeled in the registry it is hard to figure out what it what.
