standby just puts the computer in a mode to save power, sort half way between off and on. It only runs very basic functions to maintainwhat is in the ram and what not. (Basically turns off the hard disk and monitor). Hibernation actually saves a state on your computer on your hard drive and shuts it down.

standbye does just that - puts the pc into standby - all the powersave options are used so the HDD, monitor etc will be turned off - when you move the mouse or touch a key, they pc comes straight back on.

Hibernate writes the contents of your RAM to a large file on the c: drive and then powers the machine off. When you power back on, the pc is restored to the same state that it was at when you hit the power button.

Really only of use on a laptop

EDIT - blast - beaten to it.
