WARNING!! BEWARE!! Current Windows Updates!!!
I just spent over a half hour of nail-biting, hope I can get this fixed anxiety.
What happened was, my computer has been slowly downloading the current Windows Updates today. (I'm on dial-up.) So, it finally completed these new downloads about 45 minutes or so ago. I opted to install these and get them out of the way. Among this group that I got was a new Windows Installer 3.1. Don't yet know if this is the culprit or not, though. What happened was, after all the updates were installed I was prompted to reboot the computer. I did so. Only, the computer would NOT boot to the Desktop. I would get just past the Windows XP logo with the animated blue dots and then .....NOTHING BUT BLACK SCREEN. I went through rebooting the computer 3 times trying to get into normal Windows. No go! I also tried rebooting to the last good settings. Still no go! So, I opted to go into Safemode (which worked, thankfully!) and uninstalled the updates that didn't have a date of install beside them. The first set of 4 updates didn't correct the problem. What DID correct the problem was uninstalling the Windows Installer 3.1 and one other of the non-dated updates. (I think they're non-dated as they haven't yet successfully installed since the computer has yet to make it to normal Windows at this point.) So, I'm now back into normal Windows after uninstalling all of these new updates and breathing a BIG SIGH of relief that these update/s didn't do more harm than it/they did. So, BEWARE and BE WARNED! If you're doing the updates, do them ONE-AT-A-TIME so we can find out which of them may be the cause of this problem....if anyone else is, indeed, affected. |

Your problem was probably with your connection, you probably got a corrupted download. They all installed smoothly for my yesterday.

I sure hope I can find out just what went awry here. It's the first time in AGES that I've had a problem with any official Windows Updates.
BUT, I can tell you very emphatically that one of those (I suspect the Windows Installer 3.1) caused my system to misbehave. |

Please excuse the double post here. (Unless someone else responds before I get this post made, that is.
)Anyway, I have definitely found that the Windows Installer 3.1 doesn't like my system for one reason or another. Here's what I did: I booted into Safemode and went directly to the Windows directory where the Updates are stored. From there I selected to run the Windows Installer 3.1 package and it extracted, examined my system, etc. and completed the installation and cleanup. Then, I opted to Not Restart Computer yet. When all the windows were closed, I then selected the Restart the system. It FAILED to get to the Desktop after 3 more attempts to do so. So, I then went back to Safemode and Uninstalled the program once again. This time, however, things were screwed up enough that even after uninstalling it, the system still wouldn't get into normal Windows. So, at that point I had to select the "most recent .....that worked" option. That worked! I'm back into normal Windows again. So, I went to the Event Viewer, clicked on System and here's a small section of the errors that occured during the 3 attempts to get into normal Windows: ![]() Now, when I click on some of those errors to see the details I find that it says there were several essential boot files that failed to load. So, something is creating havoc in my system when I try to install this Windows Installer 3.1. Hope this gets corrected soon. I can't believe I'm the only one in the world having this problem. |

but i'd not think the Windows Installer 3.1 updates is the one that causes this either. it could be from one of the hotfixes, hard to tell. here are the Windows system files that get updated on each hotfix, hope i got them all correctly. and you can get something from the event logs. Quote:

Ctrl-Alt-Del,
You must have skimmed over my post about the last episode. The ONLY new update I tried to install was the Windows Installer 3.1. I did it alone without installing anything else. When I went to reboot the system would NOT go to the Login screen or to the Desktop. So, based on that, it's the Installer 3.1. Can't be anything else. |

you're right, sorry about that.
ok, the Windows Installer depends on the Remote Procedure Call (RPC), so it would not be because of Windows services since the Windows Installer is set to demand (manual) start up, have not yet checked the default setting but mine is on demand and you'll not disable the RpcSs anyway. i'd have to look it up and see if anything like this has been popped up already. later. |

the 'Service Control Manager' and 'DCOM' sources of the errors are both about indicating the failure of services and drivers startup. but, however, the LKG configuration does not/won't correct problems that are caused by corrupted files or drivers, so without doubt you didn't have problem with corrupted files. i still have no idea atm why the update caused this problem, you may want to check in the KB893803.log file (the file is in \WINDOWS, if you have it), also take a look in the Event errors logs, to see if you can find some useful information about this problem in your XP. |

but, if i were you i'd try removing all of the last 4-5 Windows updates including the installer 3.1 which's i suspect you've already did/done this. then D/L and re-install all the updates over again manually, but before i do this i'd also first reset all services to default and logged in Windows as the real built-in Administrator account. note-- the last LKG configuration and all the changes that were made since the last successful startup are now gone and i'm not sure if you can use the new LKG configuration to start the XP again if you still having the same problem. |

Thanks again for your suggestions and help.
I'm using the computer now online and doing my other stuff as well. I tried to install that Installer 3.1 from Safemode logged on as Admin. Got the same result as posted above. At this point, I've not tried to install any other of the recent updates that were downloaded yesterday. I HAVE, however, installed other Programs that installed and are working fine. |
