CAn any1 tell me how to fix this? because im trying to extract something to drive d that is 4 gig but drive c has only got 5 gig and 4 gig is used!

It's because of temporary files placed in c:\windows\temp\ during the extraction. See if you can configure WinRAR to not use a temp directory if it has such an option, or change the location of the global temp directory. That can be done in control_panel > system > advanced > environment_variables. Change the references to c:\windows\temp\ to d:\temp or wherever you would like to have the temp folder.

i like to add a bit of my info to the Mkk's advice above.
by default, WinRAR uses the current folder (or the current user Temp folder) to create temporary files. you can change this setting by going to the WinRaR's Options menu ->Settings ->Paths/Folder for temporary files, and click Browse, in the Browse For Folder dialog select D drive, and Make New Folder and rename it to whatever name you like (e.g. RarTemp). you can also try this and see if this would help you on the drive C space problem? |

also you might try putting your paging file on D instead of C as well.

I have a question about this two. i have two drives and multiple particians to organize my folders. I have a windows partition and a temporary file partition on the different HD. Should i change both the user variables and the system variables temporary folders to my Temporary partition? Or do you just change the user variable ones. And am i correct that you change both TEMP and TMP to the same folder? Thanks

Yeah I'd suggest setting them all to the same folder as well. Then you can clear that folder of waste periodically. Take note though that some messy software like Creative Labs drivers will still use /windows/temp/ regardless of system configuration.

you can change the location of the temp files for IE by going to control panel>internet options>temp internet files settings>move folder, but you shouldnt really use IE at the moment maybe when IE7 comes out it'll be a bit more secure.

uninstall most of programs that installs in the C, and then reinstall the programs to D.
move the TIF folder, the service pack and hotfixes backup files, your documents and other files that you can move from C to D. -Or- make the size of the C more appropriate than what you're having now. this can be done by using a 3rd party partitioning program to resize the HDD partitions. |
