Greetings and welcome to DriverHeaven!

What kind of background are you looking for? I like just a plain black background on mine.

For me, it's easy to change backgrounds to whatever you like as long as you have adminstrator rights.

Right click anywhere on a blank space on the Desktop.

Select Properties from the menu that comes up.

Click on Desktop tab

Now, select [None] at the top of the list and then move over to the Color option. Click the Dropdown arrow and select the color of you choice and then click on Apply.

I also don't like the 3D XP Desktop and prefer the old Classic style. So, while the Display Properties menu is up, click on the Themes tab.

Under the heading, Theme: click the Dropdown arrow.

Select whichever Theme you wish from the list and then click on Apply again.

If you're done, click on OK to remove the Display Properties menu.

Cheers!

Had this problem with one of my customers at Dell, same greyed out wallpaper selection and everything, used the file below to fix the issue.

Registry fix for the damaged or missing registry files.
Brought to you by http://www.the-pc-guru.com/Cannot_ch...top_wallpa.php.

Click to download the file dwpfix.reg
Run the file
Respond Yes to the prompt to merge the file with the registry.
Now try to adjust your wallpaper in your display properties.

I'm brand new here, and I've had this exact problem for MONTHS (embarrassingly enough). I completed all of the registry modifications suggested in post#13, but all that happened is that I reattained my regular wallpaper (but the box was still grayed out). Which is why I must say thanksX1000 to you, Morphuex, as when I downloaded and merged the file you suggested, I was instantly FREED! Everything is normal again, and I can change my desktop B/G at will. Thank you so much for the great advice!

I would format definatly. I would never trust buying stuff online with a cc or what have you if my system was comprimised like that. You never know what "back door" or extremely small file runs or stays dormant in the background.

If you go into your regedit and follow this path: HKEY_CURRENT USER/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/WINDOWS/CURRENTVERSION/POLICIES/SYSTEM

In there you may see a key that points to the C:\Windows\Web\desktop.html

If you see that key DELETE IT. Your virus software probably found this hijack desktop viruz and deleted the infected file already.

This took me 2 days to figure out and it was this forum that helped me figure it out. THANKS and I hope this helps!

Hi,

I just got CA out of my computer because it didn't fix that virus or the other one I had. I fixed one myself, but I can't get change my desktop now. I went to regedit and ftried to ollow this path: HKEY_CURRENT USER/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/WINDOWS/CURRENTVERSION/POLICIES/SYSTEM

but I can find HKEY_CURRENT USER/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT, but nothing past that.

I also have a box that won't go off my desktop that says microsoft.NET Framework. It tries to download something, then another box pops up and when I click on continue, it says "An unhandled exception has occured in a component in your application. Click continue and application will ignore this err and attempt to continue. Object reference not set to an instance of an object", but when I click on continue nothing happens and the box won't leave. I have to unplug my computer now because that box won't let me turn my computer off any other way.

Just got CA out of my computer, which I had to get ahold of the company to do so because it was being blocked from deletion. CA didn't work.
