exclamation Microsoft does away with dual boot?

Found a bad tidbit at www.windowsxp.nu today. Microsoft is gonna drop dual boot option on new operating systems.

WindowsXP.nu:
Quote:
Starting next year, PC makers won't be shipping dual-boot Windows desktops, as a result of a change Microsoft is making in its OEM licensing terms. Currently, some OEMs offer customers a choice of Windows versions—say, Windows 2000 Professional and Windows XP—and allow users to select one upon first booting their new machines."Microsoft will no longer offer dual installation but will offer downgrade rights in Windows XP," confirmed a spokeswoman for the company's licensing division."Previously, with dual install, a customer had to pick just one of the two operating systems and then stick with the one they chose. With downgrade rights, a customer can install an older operating system and move back up to Windows XP whenever they choose," the spokeswoman added.
Complete article here.
I know this will upset many. Can someone make this a sticky?

Well even if they do we can still use a third party boot manager.

look at the win98 situation that overwrites the mbr of another OS without giving you the option of dual boot.

But when you think of it ,i say it falls into the monopoly laws and wont be allowed.

And why would it not be allowed? They are take away the option of BUYING a dual boot system with MICROSOFT OS's on it. they arn't taking away the right to do it, just buy it. Dual OS's isn't supported by Microsoft anyway, so why buy a machine that isn't supported from the get go without your intervention.

I don't think it will upset anyone too much.
This only applies to OEM machines with pre-installed installation images.

Basically, when you power the PC on for the first time it asks you "Do you want to install Windows 2000 or Windows XP?". It installs an removes the installation images.

They want to change this to this. Windows XP loads. After it's loaded you then get the option saying "Do you want to degrade to Windows 2000?" If you choose no, it removes the Windows 2000 installation image, you if choose yes it launches the Windows 2000 image and removes Windows XP.

MS are not allowed - after a recent ruling - to ban any dual boot machines from leaving the factory. What they are banning are multiple MS dual boots from leaving the factory and that's a big difference.

So as I said, consumers won't be affected by this too much. It's mainly OEM pirates that will be affected.
