Help to create a 'Good' install of XP for all...
Note: I will be amending this thread later tonight when I get back to my main computer that has links to some of the things that I will post now. This first post will be mainly be questions that hopefully we can all try to awnser in the simplest, yet more advanced way.
Start- We all want a faster, more stable version of windows that is not bloated with A: Things that we dont need and B: Services and files that ither cant be removed without a crap load of effort, or, just in general are a bad idea to have on a machine that you use for gameing. Nlite is one of the major programs that people use to create new 'more custom' versions of windows xp. With it you can easily add hotfixes and service packs to the installation of your windows. -For some reason, Nlite no longer has a option to change the file that enables Windows File Rights Protection. I've encounterd a problem in which when you install drivers to the windows xp cd, it then belives that those drivers are the only good set. For instance, I installed ATI drivers to my install CD. When I went to upgrade the drivers, windows files right protection would not allow me to uninstall the driver so that the new driver could be installed. A few things that I would like to learn how to do is A: Auto install a giant pack of registery tweaks. B: Have windows auto install a application. I think that if we put our heads together we can create a better install for windows and maybe some guides to help people out. Cyas. |

The setting for removing the system file protection has been moved to a new tabbed named Patches if I remember correctly not currently having nLite installed. Seeing as that the file protection feature has just gotten in my way I'm always disabling it. When it comes to integrating things so far I have been reluctant to do too much of it since many things like graphics drivers and utility software tend to become outdated soon enough to not make it very worthwile for a single user. Adding direct support for unattended integration seems to slowly become more popular for utility software though and that certainly simplifies things.

you mean UNATTENDED INSTALL basicly.
First you need to read up on http://unattended.msfn.org/index.htm, I originally created this website and handed it over to Aaron from MSFN. It has everything you need to know on learning the methods and basics. Then look through the forums which give more information and help aswell as application switches. To install a bunch of registry tweaks there are a few ways, the easiest way I find is cmdlines.txt which you can read up about on the site. You can also use my new program I created which allows you to create registry files to be used with your unattended xp cd. Unattended Registry Tweakage DOTNET To unbloat windows, its easy to delete folders from the cd, remove components in the winnt.sif file so windows doesnt install things such as games(solitaire etc). My current xp cd atm will do the below among other things: - run from start to finish with no stops (no asking for serial etc) - create an account for me - install all tweaks (reg file or inf) - integrated with service pack 2 - integrated with all post service pack 2 updates - installs .net framework 1.1 + sp1 + hotfix - install java You can do pretty much anything happy reading

That would be sweet if I could even add my basic app installs in there as well.
I need a lot more info, my confusion starts with how to burn the newly created CD and have it still be auto-booting. I just did a wipe and drop. 8( Still redoing a ton. -RX Last edited by RX220; Jul 2, 2005 at 09:15 PM. Reason: typos |

If you dont know how to work with boot files then just use nlite, select your modified xp cd source folder and then select create bootable iso and it will create a .iso file for you which you can burn and it will automatically load.

If you're willing to pay, have a look at XPLite, as it automates the process of removing all these programs:
