well i tried out vista and it was cool looin, but that was bout all, wasnt much to do, so i signed up for the XP 64 trial, how long is this trial anyway? when i booted i registered cause it said i had 14 days, but ive seen nothing of another time limit?....

so far so good, found all my drivers on asus's ad VIA's sites, just gettin settled in, so ill see how games feel in a bit, Question, should most apps just work(give or take a few, im sure), just go about like regular, selecting 64 bit installations and such whenever available?

yes the apps should work pretty much the same as ever, but if you do get the option to install 64bit versions you should see a performance increase if the app is well coded

pretty much... before you install anything.. do a search and see if they have a specific 64bit instruction setup or something.. cause if you can, make the most outa your 64bit installation

only a few games that require the installation of there own stupid little (copy protection) driver that is only 32bit will generally not work.... other then that... everything else seems to install and work very very quickly on any system i've ran..

The only minor differences i've found is slot of 32bit programs that are 3D or benchmarks that are 32bit tend to have occasionally a lower result....not all that much slower result mind you....

But alot of the 64bit native apps.. expecially UT2004 64bit, shows some very seriously good results....

tried installing crap cleaner, it went, thats when i noticed the 2 separate program files folders, it works but the integration into he recyclin bin right click menu isnt there, no biggy,

a lil bummed the program (icon packager) that i used to change my icon package all at once was shareware and only the registered version supports x64, i hate the defaults, any one know of a way to get an icon package file installed on x64?

and this evaluation copy i downloaded, does anyone know exactly what restriction and\or time limits it has??

hohum will become famous soon enough

Going to try using x64 as my main O/S soon, as I've checked around and pretty much all the apps I use either work or have a newer version available that supports x64.

However, one thing I'm not too clear on is audio/video codecs... are these affected in any way? I tend to use XviD a lot for example, so it's gonna be a bit of a problem if that codec doesn't work. I'd like to assume they will work fine, but can someone clear this up for me? Thanks.

does any1 have experiance runnin ATI tray tools under x64, wandrin how this would go as i dont like loadin up the CCC to fiddle with my card, it really is a hog

EDIT*

im seein the newest tray tools supports Win 2003, i know x64 is its cousin as per my recent reading, is it safe to say 2003 compatible progs are compatible with x64, im just concerned about this cause the driver i installed was 64 bit, not the regular catalyst so is this regular ATI TT ok?

well uninstalled the CCC, installed the latest ATI TT and all is good, now for the tasty part!, installed Farcry with the 64 bit update and content, all i can say is WOW!, excuse the pun but this is the way it was meant to be played right here! smooth as i have ever played the game, everything was maxed in game with 2aa 4af via TT, definatly a huge difference in playability and the IQ is superb as well, use to have alot of lil anomilies (flashig textures, etc...) but now i havent seen any in the lil bit i played.

very happy so far, i can see usin this here for awhile while vista gets its footing, might even have to pay for a copy after awhile, hehe

I have Far Cry 64, BF2. Company of heros, Flight Simulator X Deluxe all on a now beta version of X64 with SP2 (Build 3790). I have been using X64 for a year I'd guess and it is the One!

I seen on one site they said you have to install SP1 even if it came on your copy of XP x64. Is this true?

I had to uninstall the beta and re-install the RC, but I did follow the instructions, I was using a newer build of X64 (Build 3790) and the RC is version 2825. my beta was 2805.

I do have a OEM copy of XP X64, but I have been doing beta testing hence the current setup. I like it and believe it is now a mainstream OS, I have no driver issues at all. I have a HP printer ATI video card, Audigy 2 Value sound card, Uli Chip-set and no driver issues at all.

I don't think you have to worry as long as SP1 is installed at some point, but I did not pay as close attention as I could have. I see if I can't find those instructions

And the other shoe

Release Candidate for Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 is released!
Windows Serviceability is pleased to announce the release of the Release Candidate (build 2825) of Service Pack 2 for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP Professional x64 Edition.
This build contains:
  • Roll up of hotfixes released to date
  • Roll up of security updates released to date
  • Fixes for bugs reported by Beta customers and other known issues on previous Service Pack 2 builds
This build should be used for full deployment purposes, including pre-production testing or general compatibility testing. In order to have a stable test environment we strongly recommend un-installation of any previous SP2 builds from your machines before installing build 2825.
If you previously installed an integrated build of SP2, you cannot upgrade your system to build 2825 with this refresh; you will need to re-install a released version (RTM, SP1, or R2) of Windows Server 2003 before upgrading to build 2825. Go to edited out to find an evaluation copy of Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1.
Release notes for this build can be found at edited out
With SP2, Windows Server 2003 x64 Editions will start supporting 9 new languages: Chinese Simplified, Chinese Traditional, French, German, Italian, Korean, Portuguese (Brazilian). Russian, and Spanish. With RC, Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition is available in German for the first time.
Additionally, with RC, a MUI servicing package is available, which is specific to 3 components (Microsoft Management Console (MMC) 3.0, Windows Deployment Services and Microsoft File Server Management). This is not a re-release of the Windows Server 2003 MUI Pack. This MUI servicing pack is designed to increase the compatibility between MUI and localized languages for these 3 components. More information about this pack can be found at edited out
The list of releases is as follows:

- English, German, Japanese, Korean
x86:
- Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 ISO image

What I saw was a stretching of the envelope, it seems to be more friendly toward other applications and hardware, more like 32 bit in that respect, but it still seems snappier and happier to me.

Just upgraded to x64, and I'm somewhat disappointed. I can't get a lot of my hardware to work. In particular the following:

Creative Modem Blaster PCI DI5633
Encore ENLTV-FM TV-Tuner card (Software installs but can't find any channels, so I think it just thinks the drivers installed.)
Lego Camera (Logitech QuickCam Web)

It's a bit of an annoyance, but for now I'll just have to dual boot with XP for those particular pieces of hardware. If anyone happens to know where to get drivers for any of the above, please let me know. I'll prolly be writing to the first two asking for help (don't think asking Logitech about a lego cam will get me anything but laughs).

Logitech has a ton of X64 drivers for their newer products, they actually might be better about legacy support than the others.

I tried the 5663A drivers, they didn't work for my 5633 (I think it was a COM port issue, cause it said none of the ports could be initialized, and it couldn't detect the modem).

Tried the logitech webacm software stuff and none of it detected my Lego Cam correctly.

As for the TV Tuner card, I have the feeling it's quite proprietary, as I don't even see it in my Device Manager with hidden devices visible. Though I did notice something else. My SM Bus Controller has no drivers installed either. So I tried to fix that (I actually do have 64 bit drivers for that!), and it came up with an Access is Denied error. I'm gonna go try Safe Mode. In the meantime, if anyone has a suggestion, I'd be glad to hear it.

EDIT: On further investigation, it would appear all the keys under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\ATI Technologies get an "error while opening key" message, which is where the SM Bus Controller drivers happen to try to register. What do I do?
