I wanted to know how to make it so that the recycle bin doesn't show up on the desktop. Any tips?

This is something I came up with from the Neowin Forums. I haven't tested it, so, use it at your own risk:

"If you just want to remove it from the desktop, you should be able to do it this way:
  1. Open regedit
  2. Navigate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\CLSID\
  3. Delete the key named {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}
Be sure to make a backup though."

Let us know if it works.

the TweakUI utility uses this registry edit method, it creates and sets the following registry key and value to 1 to hide the icon.

Run regedit and locate this below registry key...

"HKCU\SoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplor erHideDesktopIconsNewStartPanel",

in the right pane, modify or create the following registry DWORD value...

"{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}"

give its value data to 1,
or modify its value data from zero to 1 if this registry value does already exist.

quit the Registry Editor and restart the Explorer shell to see the changes.

note-- if you use Windows XP Professional you can also hide the icon via the Group Policy Object Editor.

if you want an easy access to the Recycle Bin from Startmenu then before removing the bin icon drag and drop the icon from the desktop onto the start button.
