Secure sites

I cannot access secure websites like Wells Fargo, Hotmails or update Norton AV what could be the problem? I have the latest IE and all activeX setting are as they should be. Checked on another working PC.

Try going to Start> Run> and typing in:

regsvr32 softpub.dll

and hit enter. See if you can access secure sites.

Look at this article too:

Most cases in my work are caused by software firewalls or outdated security certificates.

Lol I've noticed lately a lot of people calling me with NIS blocking the responses from POP3 mail servers. The message they get is "Your server has not responded in 60 seconds, do you want to continue?" As soon as you disable NIS they can get their e-mail.

Looks like its so secure it doesn't let the server acknowledgement get to the PC.

Hehehe. Well it's secure all right and you can't deny that. Kind of nice to be able to get your emails and surf though. I think I will stick with Kas.

lol me too man, and if it's not that, then it's the nis' av email scanning changing the port names or suffocating the connection I usually get 'why did you guys change my incoming port to 127.0.0.1?'

when you have this problem the first two things that should be checked out will be: your 'firewall' configuration, and then check your Windows Services console and make sure that the 'Cryptographic Services' service is started. after that try deleting the TIF and try on the SSL secured web sites again. and see?

if the service has already been started and you're sure that the firewall should not be the caused, but you still cannot access any of the SSL secured web sites,
then close IE and all other opened windows, and then re-register the following .dll files by opening a CMD window, at the prompt, type the following command lines:
(hit Enter after each line.)

regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 sccbase.dll
regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll

then, Exit out of the CMD window. and then try accessing the web sites, and see?

if all of the above does not help, then your Windows user profile could be corrupted,
try logging on to the Windows as Administrator or as another user and try to access the web sites again,
and see if this help resolving the problem?

127.0.0.1 is usually Mcafee Anti-Spam or AV changing the incoming mail server name from my experience. AVG does it too.

Mcafee definitely does it too, but norton av has been worse for it for me, probably just because of its install base. However, I have noticed avg doing this more frequently as well. btw, offtopic, which isp do you work for yousaif (if you can disclose it)? We both seem to have similar jobs...

Don't matter to me if I tell. I work for Charter Communications doing tech support for cable broadband. Been doing it for about 4 years now.

Slowly but surely I am getting my system building side job up and running. Hope to open a shop sometime soon.

OK, so I can't keep removing NIS every time a user has a problem like this so how is it repaired so they keep the piece of crap? Some swear by Norton but I swear at it.

I'll have to try and find it again but I seen a post on Microsoft of programs that had a major slow down effect on windows xp and Norton, I believe, 2003-2005 was one bad boy. I will see if I can find it again. It showed many apps that had the same effect.

Reinstall it (i'm not sure what setting in nis causes the issue), or use a different firewall, like Kerio, zonealarm, or sygate.

I don't believe reinstalling it will do it, all the settings will remain no matter how go about removing it's folder and reg interies. What if customer insist's on NIS. There has to be somewhere within the program that can adjust this problem. What I'm saying is you just can't go around and remove all your customers NIS.

I don't remove it. I just have them disable it temporarily. If that allows them to do what they needed to then I send them on their way. I don't work for Norton, nor do I sell Norton, so I don't support it.

Often I will let them know that they aren't the first person to have this problem and that Norton SHOULD have something in their support section that addresses is.

In fact they do:

Whole article can be found http://symantec.atgnow.com/consumer/resultDisplay.do?gotoLink=666&docType=1000&context Id=3812%3A666.744&clusterName=ConsumerCluster&cont entId=647d608b-7571-48e8-a290-cf603a2aee82&responseId=2c6fe064517bb5c1%3A1b1fbf4 %3A1074463a00e%3A5ada&groupId=1&answerGroup=4&scor e=420&page=http%3A%2F%2Fservice1.symantec.com%2Fsu pport%2Fnip.nsf%2Fpfdocs%2F2005020123585136&result =3&excerpt=%28Account%3A+%26lt%3Baccount+name%26gt %3B%2C+POP3+Server%3A+%26lt%3Bserver+name%26gt%3B+ Error+Number%3A0x800ccc0f.%26quot%3B&resultType=50 00#

To configure Norton Personal Firewall
  1. Start Norton Internet Security.
  2. Click Personal Firewall.
  3. Click Configure.
  4. On the Networking tab, click Trusted.
  5. Add the incoming (POP3) mail server address and the outgoing (SMTP) mail server address.
  6. Click OK.

From what I have seen it seems to happen shortly after an auto update gets run on NIS.

Usually people won't have any issues with it, but when you deal with 40+ people per day and they are all having some kind of issues with their Internet mail or web service then you are bound to run into this fairly regularly.

His issue was with secure sites and I have seen this before but no solution but it has to be within the firewall somewhere. Well I did find some info on it at Norton and there adivice is to turn down your firewall settings to medium because there not sure quite how to fix it and they would like you to fill out a form and tell them of your situation so they can work on it. NICE NORTON. Worthless piece of junk software.

I guess I've never had this issue with any firewall before, so I've never had to hunt for a solution. It does happen regularly to customers here, and that's what norton's toll free number is for As long as secure browsing works once nis is disabled, we're happy, as far as support boundaries go.

Same here. I don't work for Norton, so I don't support it. But on my sidework on the weekends and such its good to be able to fix the issue.

Problem is however if you turn your firewall down it's not secure anymore. If they want Norton I would suggest turning it off and using zonealarm instead.

Sygate for the win. Zonealarm can be a pesky, finnicky child at times.

Sygate was OK but there was one thing that kept poping up and bothering me and you had to turn that part off so I went back to zonealarm. I can't put my finger on what it was but it would pop up about every 10 min once it started and it was a flaw in the program,I found after a google search.

I know what you were talking about. It was integrated for wireless networks and it kept trying to phone home. All I did with that was block it. Since then its been fixed by Sygate and it no longer poses a problem.
