Printer probs with WinME

Printer problems
Hello
I am having terrible problems trying to install an Epson Stylus Colour 640 printer using a parallel connection onto a machine running WinME.
The printer worked fine under Win98SE however I decided to upgrade the system to Win ME with a clean install.
I have downloaded the file from the Epson website which is compatible with a parallel connection and WinME.
When I unzip the file and try to install it the installer gets nearly to the end of installation but a message is then put up:
Specified printer cannot be installed. Your windows system may be abnormal condition. Exit windows and try again or setup your windows again.
Everything is connected correctly and the port settings from device driver are:Com 1, Com 2 and Printer Port with a yellow exclamation mark beside it.
Anyone help please?
Thanks

check and try the following...

in the system.ini and win.ini, one of these files might be corrupted due multiple incomplete drivers install, try editing out duplicated entries or cleaning out any corrupted entries if they do exist.

check in Add/Remove for the printer software and remove it.
also, check in the Printers folder and your C drive, and remove all unfinished drivers installation files.

in Device Manager, remove the COMs and printer port under the Ports node. and reboot your PC, the Windows system will detect and then add these ports back in.

and then, turn off all of the background programs and try the drivers install again. and see?
