Here is the full story.

My System:

CPU - AMD 2400xp (2.gHz) Socket A

RAM - Gig of ram (1x 515 & 2x 256)

HDD - 1x 200 Gig New

DVD/CD combi, New

GRAPHICS - ATI 9550 256MB New

PSU – 450 NEW

MOBO - ASUS A7V600-X. New

OS – Windows XP Home. (with SP2 + all updates)


The problem is with DirectX, (I do have 9.0c) when i try to run and thing (games, programs etc) that use DirectX (Like Halo, Half Life 2, Dawn of war) it pops up with a windows message thats says that DirectX is not enabled, i can get 'dxdiag' but everything is fine, 'no problems found' and all the 3D test etc work fine. I have upgraded the following (all new)

HDD, Graphics Card, Motherboard, PSU, Monitor, CD/DVD, Keyboard, mouse and even a new chair.

Nothing seems to get rid of this problem, I have tried every part of my PC in my mates, (running XP PRO) everything is fine.
Another thing is that when windows is starting up it lags for about 1min 30sec before my monitor turns off then turns straight back on again to boot into windows? Is this part of the problem?

I can put this down to three thing, first – windows XP Home is well utter pap, or the second - is that my CPU and Ram are chaffed, the last is that my graphics card is hounted, Little help please!

When you run dxdiag, it reports you have DirectX 9.0c (4.09.000.0904) for the DirectX Version? If so, you've got a Windows component or driver component out of whack - you trying your hardware in another machine clears your video card...

Just as a test, try this: From Device Manager, Remove the graphics display adapter -- BOTH instances.

Then, reboot and ONLY let Windows detect your graphics card and install native drivers.

Before attempting to install any other drivers, try the games to see if the error still comes up.

try using the Windows XP SP2 CD to setup the Windows again and see?

reformat and install a clean version of Windows XP SP2. the SP2 includes the version of the DirectX.

after the Windows setups and all needed device drivers install are done, do not disable any default component of the Windows XP. then try installing one of the things in question and run it to see if the problem still exist?

also, do use and/or create the Windows XP SP2 CD that does NOT include any other updates (then use this CD to setup the Windows). do not use third party program to create this Windows setup CD (use third-party program to burn the ISO image or to craete an ISO image are okay, but don't use third-party program to reduce that size of the Windows XP installs files).
the Windows setup CD must include all of default component of the Windows XP.

do not use third-party registry cleaner program. do not install any other Windows updates (therefor, don't use, nor connect to internet during this period of time). do install an official device drivers only. these to isolate the problem.
