Weird XP problem
ok i just recived a new hard drive in the mail yesterday. i installed it and installed windows XP Pro. i got all the windows update. i installed all of my drivers. the problem occured when i downloaded Service pack 2. now when i boot my computer it freezes at the XP logo screen. the blue bar goes across a few time and then it just freezes and does nothing. so i try to reboot in safe mode. same thing, it freezes at the logo screen. so i tried rebooting in safe mode one more time. an error popped up that said something like: my system32/ntskrnl(i think that was it, its a kernel file though) file was corrupt and to please reinstall it. so i try to reboot with the XP cd in the drive to repair XP but it never boots from the CD.
i have no idea what to do. and its a brand new hard drive with nothing on it. |

ok now whenever i start my computer i get an error message right before the xp logo comes on. it says that windows could not start because a file is missing or corrupt. and it says that that file is windows32\drivers\ntfs.sys
than it says to repair it with the Xp cd but when i reboot with the cd in the drive it doesnt boot from the cd. i need to know how i can boot xp from the cd so i can repair the missing file. thank you. |

yeah i realized about the BIOS thing when i woke up this morning. the file came up missing after i installed the drivers for my motherboard. i wasnt connected to the net and the only thing besides my mouse and keyboard i had plugged in was my headset and speakers. im pretty sure i partitioned and formatted correctly. i followed all of the directions.
ill see what i can do when i get home. |

You haven't listed your computer specs which would be a very good idea to do so.
I just did a new Windows install on my mom's computer this past week. She has Windows XP SP1 and I had to do the updates. Once SP2 downloaded and the computer rebooted, it took close to 10 minutes at the Windows Logo screen before Windows finally came up. It WAS NOT a lock up. It was simply SP2 finishing the installation. Be sure to take notice of the hard drive activity light on the front of the computer. As long as it's blinking and stuff....do not reboot the computer. So, it sounds to me like you do have a corrupted installation and would be better off starting again from scratch. Good luck! |

A missing ntfs.sys is likely caused by a disk error. Check your hard drive cables first, making sure they are snug.
When you do your install, you should install XP, and immediately install SP2 from a CD. THEN install drivers, critical updates, etc. You should also try "Full" format instead of "Quick" while you are setting up your install partition. If you get it running successfully, run scandisk to check the new drive for problems. rasta

this error is often found when using the Convert command to convert FAT volumes to NTFS within Windows.
in this case could be that the Ntfs.sys file is missing or becomes corrupted after the service pack installation. from within Recovery Console use "Copy" command to copy the new file to the target location. if you had this problem when you've not installed the SP, then you could just copy the file from the Windows XP CD to the target location. but since you've installed the SP2 then you will need to copy the "Ntfs.sys" SP2 version. the Ntfs.sys's target location is \Windows\System32\drivers just like you've seen on the error message on boot. so, at the prompt in the Recovery Console type in this command (this is generic example of the Copy command.) copy <full path of the file that you want to copy> <full path of target location> |

ok well i dont know what happened but it let me start reinstalling and partitioning. but when the partition gets to about 65 percent a blue screen pops up and it says windows had to shut down because a problem was caused by the following file: partmgr.sys
DRIVER_UNLOADED_WITHOUT_CANCELLING_PENDING_OPERATI ONS *sigh* its always something. |

OK, I found your MB. Are you using an IDE drive (2+ inches long, 80 pins) or an SATA drive (1/2 inch long, no discernable pins)?

Stuff to Try
Next step is to simplify. Since you're not using SATA controller, disable it in BIOS. Hook up CD drive on one IDE channel, HD on the other. Disconnect all other drives. See if your problem persists.
If it does, try:

multiple problems with your computer system, and every problems that you had since the initail posted till now seems different.
at first the softwares seems to be causing you problems, but now it seems that the hardwares are causing it. either its capabilities or configurations. good advice from Rasta Monsta there. anyway, could you post your hardware specifications we might be able to give you an idea here and what's going on... |
