Wi-Fi won't connect.
Picked up a Wi-Fi adapter with my new mobo and I just can't seem to connect..
I'm getting an error: Windows was unable to find a certificate to log you on to the network Networkname. I put in my WEP key in the connection settings though. What does that error mean? You guys need any addtional info? How do I diagnostic this? I did a bit of searching and found this, which unfortunately did not help. First step verify that your certificates have > been installed correctly: >> - goto start->run, "mmc.exe" > - goto file, Add/Remove Snap-in... > - Click Add, then Certificates, and select My User > Account. >> Verify that the your intended certificates are > under Certificataes - > Current User/Personal/Certificates. > If it is, go back to your 802.1X configuration > page and go to the Smart > Card or other Certificate Properties page: > - unselect Validate server certificate > then check to see if it works then. Do you have > "Use simple certificate > selection" selected? > On another note, I'm developing a revised set of > howtos at the moment, > its slowly coming together up at > www.missl.cs.umd.edu/Projects/wireless/8021x. Is this a school, home, or business network you are trying to connect? What kind of authentication is required and how are authentication keys provided for you?
A lot of school networks authenticate differently from home networks, especially with the number of people that connect to them on a daily basis.

This is my home/private network.
The security is a randomly generated WEP Key. I generated three different keys and got the same error BUT my PSP was able to connect to the network using the proper key. |

If it is your home network, just to troubleshoot it have you tried opening it up completely for a short period of time just to make sure that the new wireless adapter can connect at all?

Ok, it lets me connect to it if there is no security/wep..
I'm 200% sure that I was entering the proper WEP though.. [EDIT] Got it to work by forcing me to be prompted for the WEP key. |

Yayyyy glad you got it working.
Sometimes you just have to hit a problem from another direction to find the solution.

One common issue, is where the card utilities or Windows can be used to control things.
If you wish to control the settings using the utilities, you need to uncheck the option for windows, as the default is for windows to do it. |

In the control panel go to Windows Wireless Manager (or something like that). In the properties of it uncheck the box that says something like "Let Windows Manage this Wireless Connection."

daedal, have you tried turing off IEEE 802.1x authentication competely? If you have a pretty good WEP key (128bit or above), as well using either MAC filtering or are not broadcasting your routers SSID then you really don't need IEEE authentication. On top of that you can also turn off DHCP and run a static IP based network. While it can get complicated if your ISP keeps changing DNS servers, it would allow you to have more control over your network.
BTW: if you do turn off "Windows Wireless Zero Configuration" as Yousaif suggested make sure that you reinstall your adapters configuration tool. Even though it theoretically should kick in right away now that Windows isn't handling connections there could be issues with the adapters software or settings. Doing a reinstall of the drivers/software is just to make sure you get a clean set of files, and that it reaserts itself as the main tool to handle connections. One thing: If you have an Intel wireless adapter definatly dump Windows WZC, and use Intels Pro Set software instead. I've found in a number of cases where Windows WZC would keep screwing up with Intels adapters, and the connection would jump all over the place from 1mbps to normal. Up down, up down.. can drive you nuts. Using Intels softwre to run things will stablize the connection.

Tip, the WZC also screws with Netgear and Dlink adapters from my experience.
And yes, sometimes you have to reinstall the card's driver/ utitlity after you turn it off, I forgot to mention that.
