Um, I am doubting that you had a DVDROM drive 6-7 years ago. That would make it 1996-1997....back then Pentium 1s were the thing and 200 mhz was a lot. It isn't 6-7 years old... Sorry.

When did the problem start? Had you updated anything or done anything to your PC just prior to the problem?

I got one of the earliest DVD ROM drives available for computer back in 1998. It was a Creative Labs product.
I got it for the initial purpose of playing, Tex Murphy - Overseer, which was, at that time, released by Access. (Now copyrighted by Microsoft.)
The Access Copyright date is 1998.

I never was able to play the game from the DVD disk, however, because of a lot of driver issues at the time.

Anyway, I still have an Hitachi GD-2000 DVD ROM drive that I got with another package.

Since then, when I've encountered problems with DVDs failing to play, I usually REMOVE the device from within Device Manager and let Windows redetect and install it again.

I also reinstall the software for playing DVDs.

But, I haven't had an issue in quite some time now.

EDIT: Just to let you know, I just watched the entire DVD of, SIGNS. No problem at all here.
