Just avoid the hassles and reinstall everything.

The encrypting can be undone by right-clicking the file,
select 'properties',click the advanced tab. One of the options in the following box is 'encrypt contents to secure data', make sure this is unticked then click 'apply' then 'ok'. This should do the trick. As to why XP encrypted them on it's own in the first place ? I haven't a clue Hope this helps

Thanks, but I already tried this

Did XP encrypt them or were they already encrypted when you downloaded them? which would explain why you don't have the key for them? no?

I think they were not encrypted, but it's my brother who certainly encrypted the files, but a re-install of XP (before we used an illegal one, now everybody's legal) has lost the previous key, rendering the files corrupt....
I know that it took time to answer, but it's better to answer late than never, right?
