you need to boot from the floppy disk, you can tell your computer to boot from a floppy disk in your bios. if you dont understand how to do this i will explain further.

If it's a full version of XP, you should just be able to have the CD in the drive when you turn on the system and you will get a line that says something to the effect: Press space to boot from cd...

If you wait too long to hit spacebar, it will continue to boot from the harddrive...

Anyway, when you hit space (when it says to) you will eventually be presented with a menu of things to do. Tell it you want to set up XP now. You will then get options to select a partition to set up XP on, and options to format that partition and so on....

Hope that helps ya! At least to get started anyway.

If running maxtor I like PowerMax software that checks and does low level format

PowerMAX from maxtor is an excellent drive checker and will do a low level format that fixes most problems with Maxtor drives and will tell if you hard drive is a bad drive

later

I got curious about it and went and got the link for PowerMAX, which is right here... It looks pretty useful, even though only half of my drives are Maxtors... anyone know of equivalent programs for other manufacurers?

Just a fyi, either a full or upgrade version of WinXP can be used to format/reinstall.

Just set first boot device to cdrom in bios and enjoy. This is said with a lot of reformatting experience.....

Western Digital has it's own hard drive checker & low level format proggie called Data Lifeguard. Most hd manufacturers have their own individual proggies that do this as well, just go to the hd's website and check in the support/download sections.

I couldn't get powermax to detect my drives. The list would show up blank and I have 2 maxtors in my rig. The only thing I could think of is that it doesn't understand my IDE controller. I have an Abit BD7-II mobo which has the Intel 845E chipset. The chipset contains the IDE controller, 82801DB, which is not mentioned in the list of drivers.

Aren't IDE controllers standard? At least when it comes to PIO mode? I don't understand why powermax doesn't fall back on this.
