I kinda posted this in another thread, but I didnt get any responses, and I realized the problem was slightly different than i had posted anyway. In Media player, I can not play wav files or midi files. When it attempts to play or downoad the codec I get the error about the file format or compression method is unsupported. These are common wav files in the windows/media folder. I do not have any trouble w/ any other video or audio files in media player. However I have trouble w/ other audio files in certain games or applications. For example I have a pc alarm clock and you can set it up to play wavs or MP3s or whatever and when it goes off nothing plays. Also I have a golf game that has its background music set as MP3s they do not play. Finally I have Madden 06 football and it will not play the EA sports Trax or any of my MP3s either. I have tried many things including:

1. uninstalling/resinstalling about 4-5 different codec packs
2. Reinstalling sound card drivers
3. dling the windows media runtime stuff WMFAdist.exe and such
4. deleting/unregistering and manually readding any and all *.acm files or *.ax files that have to do w/ audio
5. Ran defrag and registry cleaner
6. Ran Sherlock (The Codec Detective) and it didnt find any broken codecs, and here are the audio ones i currently have installed.

Have you been using any program to find and remove 'unused files' from your hard drive and/or to clean your Windows 'registry'? if yes, then restore your Windows system from the program's backups, both the unused files and the registry infomations. and see...

if that does not help, and if you still using the Windows XP's System Restore then try using it.

if you do not use the System Restore, nor have not been using other back up method, then i think you might well be ready to re-install your Windows system.

download a codec pack, like K-Lite or something similar, and perhaps update/re-install windows media player. Sounds like a corrupt codec to me

I havent used anything to remove files excpet registry mechanic which i had been using for years w/o any problems. I dont have system restore on and I am not exactly sure when I started having the problem anyways. I have tried 2-3 versions of Klite along w/ 2-3 other codec packs. I did try to uninstall media player, but I wasnt 100% sure how to do this. The only way that i saw to "uninstall it" was to roll back to version 9, but then I dont know how to get rid of version 9?
