iexlpore.exe is Internet Explorer. Mdm.exe is usually some kind of sortware used to control a hardware emulator modem. So if you see this when you are surfing the web it is probably because you are running IE and are on dial up. (Guessing on the dial up part, it usually is automatically run in your startup)

this could be due to a script that run during Windows starts up, this script schedules the IE to start on a certain time like at every hours. about the mdm.exe process... the one that shows in your Task Manager could be legitimate, or could be a scumware. view the system processes with the Process Explorer (sysinternals.com), then get the "Path" to the mdm.exe. you can also search your drives for this file and see how many of the mdm.exe file do exist? IF you are sure that you disabled the Machine Debug Manager service then the mdm.exe process (legitimate one) should not be started, nor listing in the TM no more. let's do this also, open the Internet Options, at the Advanced tab checked front of the two "Disable Script Debugging..." options. also make sure the Machine Debug Manager service's startup status is disabled. if you have to change the service startup status then just reboot your computer after. then, check the mdm.exe process again and see what happens? anyway, could you provide logfile of the HijackThis? |

it's not that simple. he did the right thing that he asked those questions on the initial post. he was wondering why those two processes were showing in the Task Manager, when he himself did not start the IE, and no IE window on the desktop. and the Machine Debug Manager service was already been disabled. |

I'm glad that google found this djsolidsnake86 post with the same problem as mine. Well after 3 days of killing these processes from background i started to worry.
I don't use IE for browsing about one year (using opera), so IEXPLORE.EXE process never been loaded for a months, neither mdm.exe. But now, from time to time i notice these two processes in background. If i don't use it, so i would like that it isn't working. I wonder, if there were no IE and MDM in background week ago, why it's now. And by the way, i don't use any antispyware or antivirus software for a years (it's useless to me). Hm.. well, if i see iexplore and mdm in memory again, i thing i will scan PC for viruses

the problem is... alot of scumware... spyware... hijacking progs and scrips and even viruses mimic what typical users and even high end technical users would consider harmless..
I've seen a virus mimic explorer.exe (i knew it was strange when i saw 2 instances of explorer.exe running) Theres been other hijacking software that mimics system services and other programs such as msmsgr.exe or mdm.exe or recently, found a nasty bit of spyware that mimics nortans antivirus auto protection as a random norton specific *.exe. Although your machine appears to be running just fine, what most hacker and proffesional assholes in general if you don't mind me saying, prefer you to beleive so they can walk in through the backdoors they've created on your machine, launching attacks from your machine, checking out what you've got if they wanted, hell at any given time, someone could wipe your HD if they really knew how to.

lets not look over the fact that, that little amount of memory that it is eating could be used toward something else. no matter how much or how little you are using, i personally like to get all i can out of what i have. Can never be too fast.

bdon.. i totally agree...
i run an average of 20 proccesses.. basically the default windows processes are loaded and ati's CLI.exe... that is IT.. nothing more i remove system restore however... but anyone running more then 25 proccesses on startup is going to have a machine loaded with useless bloatware

the mdm.exe can be a virus. it's is a known virus. i think the only way to help them stop worrying about what they have been worrying all this time would be: tell them how can they have those two processes checked into, especially the mdm.exe, and encourage them to do so. |
