Another Windows Update Goof
My 'other' computer uses an ABIT BD-7 motherboard that has onboard RealTek AC'97 Audio.
For whatever reason, Microsoft Update determined that I needed updated C-Media AC'97 drivers and the result was that I ended up with a non-working audio driver until I forced the system to use RealTek drivers by downloading and manually installing the drivers. Just another example to show that the Microsoft Updates can't be left all to themselves to determine accurate system updates! |

i guess you have to remember that next time, don't use Windows Update drivers. unlike you've never known this kind of problem before
![]() download and install the drivers direct from the maker of the hardwares. i think, it does not matter whether it's signed or unsigned drivers as long as it worked. does not have to be the latest version at all time either, just read the change logs and see if it's concerned the product you are using. |

I usually pay closer attention but this one slipped by me. I'm not making excuses, but, I've been working on a LOT of different computers lately and maybe just forgot which driver was needed for that particular machine. I WILL know better next time.

i used to like one of a device driver that was on the Windows update site because it seems to work quite well on the Windows systems, it was for an old NIC card (which is built for an OEM), i didn't really want to buy any new NIC card and i used about 8-10 of them at the time.
this was the only Windows update drivers that i'm interested in. Not for sound, video, modems drivers... ![]() if i only want to use the Windows signed version, then it may not be the latest version, but anyway, the maker of the hardwares must have all the needed informations for me to decide if i want to update the drivers or not. |
