??? FREEZE! :( sp2 trouble too

this problem always occurs after restarting when installing any nvidia windows xp drivers OR sp2 update.

problem = after windows xp start-up loading screen, black screen comes up, mouse arrow briefly shows up, windows hangs. monitor goes to stand-by. optical mouse light is sometimes on. try ctrl alt del, nothing works. try windows key and U twice, to shut it down. also does not work. computer is pretty much not responding. press reset button and computer beeps then floppy disk light goes on. press power button and it shuts down.

no problems in safe mode when problem has not been rolledback.

system restore before drivers installed also works.

Pentium IV 2.0 ghz
Windows Xp sp1 [recent reformat due to this problem]
Gigabyte GA-PE667 motherboard
Nvidia Geforce 440 mmx card
brand new 350 W PSU
256 mb RAM (one single wafer, already tried changing slots)

Anyone know what's wrong or an alternate graphics driver i can download for the meantime? Right now i'm using the standard VGA and its super slow. Please help me out, i'm desperate. THANKS.

Rahnee

try creating a new Windows XP CD with SP2 slipstreamed, then clean install the XP with SP2 using this CD.
and see if you have any problem after the installation is done?
if not, try installing rest of the drivers...?

check this below link on how to create the new XP CD...

i will give this a go.

however it's the graphics driver i am a bit more concerned about..

from what i have heard, sp2 is more trouble than it's worth?

it's okay if you don't want to use the XP SP2. not sure why you don't want to use it.
but anyway, you should check the motherboard/chipset drivers.
you should be able to install the drivers from nvidia website after you've installed the mentioned.

i have no idea..

when i install the nvidia driver, the process stops on 56% and the screen flashes twice and i hear the HDs loading for about 30 seconds. then it finishes installing and when i restart is when the problem occurs. this is when i reboot in safemode and system restore to before i install the driver. now it's back to standard VGA.

i'm even considering buying a new graphics card that isn't nvidia so i don't have to put up with it anymore.

p.s mobo and chipset up to date already.

as for this problems also happens after you tried to install SP2 my guess is that one of hardware on the computer may not compatible with the SP2. anyway, i have some questions...
have you ever used this computer (with same hardwares) without this problem before?
and what version number of the nvidia drivers that you tried to install?

i have had this computer for about 5 years
first installed the nvidia drivers off the CD provided, but can't locate this CD anymore. (lost)
problem occured randomly a month ago
thought it was a power source problem
new 350W PSU bought
reformat HD, reinstall windows xp at this time also

try to install sp2 = freezes, system restore fixes
install sp1 with no problems
install sound drivers and mobo/chipset drivers etc with no problems
update bios with no problems
try to install nvidia 40.72 winxp WHQL driver = freeze, system restore fix
try to install nvidia 29.42 winxp WHQL driver = freeze, system restore fix
also try the lastest one off nvidia "download" page (http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp) = freeze

so short answer, no this hardware has not ran on sp2 before,
however it has run on windows xp sp1 as well as a old nvidia driver from the CD

any ideas on what new hardware i need? mobo or video card?

thanks again for your attention

between your motherboard and the Geforce 440 mmx card... to be sure you'll have to try another card on the board?

i'd say the cause of problem is at the Geforce card, you may have to keep trying on some more older version drivers and it may work.

This sounds like a lovely SP2 problem to me...
Have you tried a completely clean install of a slipstreamed Windows XP with SP2?
Most likely, SP2 is having some sort of conflict with the drivers you're using (probably not just the video card drivers).
But before you do any of that... Did you use DriverCleaner Pro in safe mod before installing your new driver set? Try that and see if it helps.
