Problems with just about any games!

Hello
I just got a new computer, and just about every 3d-game crashes in about 10-20 minutes.
Here's my computer's specs: Amd athlon xp 2600, 512 mb ram, windows xp, inno3d gefrorce 5600 (256 mb). I have direct-x 9.0, my 3d-card drivers are version 45.23. The games I play crash to desktop without any error messages, or reboot the system. I contacted novalogic for the problems comanche4 (it came with the 3d-card), they couldn't help, just suggested turning off the hardware sound acceleration. then I contacted codemasters (problems with operation flashpoint), and they just adviced to update all drivers, and other stuff. Can anyone help me with these problems, since I can't play any games properly. I haven't overclocked my pc or anything.
kind regards

Sorry to hear you are having problems. What size is your PSU, 300w, 400w? What are your case temps? Have you tried DX9b? Are your motherboard drivers and BIOS up to date? Does this happen with any other drivers?

some info

Hi
My power source seems to be 300w. Talking about temps, I noticed that there's no case fan in my pc, and temps were in about 55 celcius (CPU) after starting and playing for a while so I removed the left side panel and it runs at about 45 now. I haven't tried direct-x 9.0b, I have the version 9.0 About the mobo drivers motherboard is via-based so I have the latest 4In-1 drivers, but I haven't updated bios or anything (in some forums people told about lowering agp from bios and it can't be changed (it's gray, and stuck to 8x , can this cause problems wiht 3d-games?). My Mobo is asus a7v8x-x and the asus probe says it is "asus a7v8x-x acpi BIOS revision 1003", I guess it's version 1003, Sholud I update bios or what+
Regards

Big Grin I think I solved the problem!

Games run fine now! My friend suggested trying the omega drivers, I got them, but problems continued. Agp can't still be altered, so I tried playing with the frequency settings, they were set initially to 400 mhz so I tried to raising it to 500mhz, and max payne hung up almost immediately! So I tried lowering to 330 mhz and none of games have crashed after that! I think it's strange that a 3d-card can't work properly with the "official drivers and a user has to tweak the settings in order to get games to run withuot crashing all the time! I think I should contact Inno3D about this. They might be interested

If the video card won't run at default speed I would RMA the card. Unless you can just live with it running slower. I would try a good 400- 450 watt PSU and see how it runs at default speed before you return the card though.

Well, since I only needed to lower the speed of my 3d-card to 330 from 400 mhz, I think I can live With it. Though it's strange that a card can't run any games at default speed (with the official drivers, I wasn't able to play almost any any games). I think I should contact the store where the computer was bought, maybe I could get some service on it. Do you think I should contact Inno3d too about this?

Install DX9b- that's what the drivers are probably designed for.

I'm getting desperate...

Well, now I have the direct-x 9.0b installed, but I still have problems! Games still crash, either to desktop, or by rebooting the whole computer. Should I contact manufacturers of components, or contact the store where this computer was purchased, to get some advice. I think they could test it somehow in order to solve the problems...

Moa

Well, did it run better with earlier drivers? By the way, what kind of a computer do you have? when a game is made with quake 3 engine, it doesn't necessarily run fast, is the engine has been updrated heavily. Have you tried turning the graphic details down a little bit? You could also try disabling anisotropic filtering, it might be slowing thing down, if you run the game with high details. Sorry to hear you're having problems, I'm trying to get my games working without crashing all the time.

Emeritus, did your PC come with a windows disk? If so, did it come pre-installed? If it did, I would reinstall Windows after a fresh Format C: before I blamed the hardware.

About XP

Yes the computer came with a windows disk and xp was pre-isntalled. About reinstalling windows, that's exactly what I had to do about a month ago! One time I started it up, and it refused to start up properly. It offered different choices for restarting in "error-withstand-mode" (I don't know what that is is english, as my windows is finnish). There was choice with network options and stuff. I tried them all but all of them returned to the same screen without starting windows. I called the store where the computer was bought, and told to reinstall windows. I did it and everything was fine again, exept that games still had problems. (when I tried operation flashpoint the first time, it crashed after about 5 seconds in the main menu! all updating has helped a little but it's still impossible to play as you can't now when it crashes next)
Could someone give some advice in updating BIOS, as I have never done that before, to make sure I don't screw it up or something. My motherboard is Asus A7V8X-X, and the bios version is 1003

Is a good page for you to bookmark.

You have an old BIOS. If there was no problems, I wouldn't update it. But with all these issues... It's worth a try..

You also need to format your hard drive before you install windows. At least it's a good thing to do if all these problems keep coming back.

Have you ever formatted your hard drive? Updating bios is pretty easy- just follow the directions in the readme exactly and you will have no problems. You need a floppy or 2 formatted, and boot from the floppy with bios and do what they say for your motherboard..

Also, what kind of sound card are you using? You should try taking it out and see what happens, sometimes soundcard drivers cause lockups.

I would update your bios, go with a clean Windows install, get all the updates, update your chipset drivers, don't use any sound or ethernet, use latest WHQL video card drivers- all at stock speed and see if it hangs. If it does- I would say you need a new Power supply. If it still doesn't work, try a new card.

Also get memtest86 - put it on a floppy and boot from floppy- let it run for a few hours to make sure you don't have memory errors. - you might want to do this before you do anything, just to make sure- memtest86 is a great free program to test your mem/ pc config to rule out errors in general.

Edit- I also just saw this about your mobo.

ASUS EZ Flash
With ASUS EZ Flash, you can update BIOS directly from the BIOS setup menu. No more DOS-based flash utility and bootable diskette required. ----> Maybe easier to udate your bios this way..

ASUS C.O.P. (CPU Overheating Protection)
ASUS C.O.P. is a hardware protection circuit that automatically shuts down the system power before temperatures go high enough to permanently damage your CPU. ---------> make sure to go through your BIOS and shut these auto protect features off- including your fan speed auto shutdown settings-- these could shut down or restart your PC when they shouldn't sometimes.
