major slowdowns in games

hello.
i've noticed that my framerate in all games i've played drops drastically when things like steam (not to be confused with valve's steam...), smoke, etc. etc. appear on the screen. for example, in gta3 and vc you can get a new paint etc. -- when the car's finished, the doors open and there's paint still in the air is when the slowdowns occur. in nfs there's one map where you get to drive through a little pool of water and when the water gets splashed the game slows down for a few seconds, then it's back to normal as always... the slowdowns are hardly noticable when this sort of effect only takes a small portion of the screen; though when it's right in front of the camera framerate automatically drops below 10 which makes most games kinda hard to play. it never really bothered me that much until i started playing legacy of kain: defiance -- there's lots of water, fire, smoke, whatever everywhere that make this game work like crap. i've no idea what may be causing this, i'm running windows xp pro with all the latest updates, gf4ti4200 (1.4523 omega drivers)... if you know how to fix this... do tell
btw sorry if this is the wrong place to ask but i dont know any other good tech forums.

Have u tryed the WhQl Drivers From nvidia,? in this forum session, i pointed to the 5306 WHQL Drivers.
Overclocked the Core and Ram? , tweaked with Rivatuner and/or nvHardpage?

My son have the same card as u have (an Asus), and he solved it's problems with i suggest to u,
he uses Rivatuner and nvHardpage tweakers wich u can dl it at guru3d.com for free.
with this tweaker u can experiment between quality and speed playing games.

i wish u luck...

well, thanks. im gonna try installing the whql 53.03 drivers just to see if it helps. cant use em in the long run tho, as they dont work with the games i play (games that use punkbuster, the anticheat proggie). my vcard is overlocked and tweaked, but im kinda affraid of taking it up too high, because i wouldnt be able to afford a new one if id screwed something up... especially that its cooler has been acting weird lately, making a lot of noise etc. (cleaning it didnt help) :<

I had a Ti4200 and tried every damn driver out there and found the best to be the Omega 1.4403. Everything after only slowed down game play or added visual artifact
