Default Post I'm having a problem

I am having a problem which i cannot seem to fix.
I have recently built a new computer with stats as follows

Intel P4 2.4 Ghz
512mb DDR RAM
Motherbord Asus P4B533-E
PC power and cooling Silencer 400 ATX
Visiontek Extasy GeForce4 ti4600
Soundblaster Audigy MP3+
Creative PC-DVD16x
Lite-On 40x12x40 cd-r burner
Windows XP Pro

Everything works fine until i install the Nvidia Detonator video card drivers. Upon which roughly 1/2 the icons turn black, the computer freezes or restarts itself while starting up, and there are pixelation artifacts in games. A message appears saying the system has recovered from a serious error and that the video driver is most likely at fault.

I downloaded the newest driver and tried installing that but the problem remained. I thought the problem might have been with lingering corrupted files that the initial driver that came with the video card. So i reformatted, reinstalled windows xp pro, and as soon as i installed the new nvidia driver i downloaded the problem came back. At the moment i'm not sure as to what software or hardware the problem is in, but if you could help out i would greatly appriciate it.

OK try this:

First try getting rid of any other drivers related to the vid card(reg/add-remove etc.)
Second when you reboot and it asks for drivers send it to a dead end so its forced
to install as a standard vga graphics card and reboot.
Now when you reboot go to device manager/display adapter/driver and update driver with the driver set you want.

If it dont work you can try removing any other cards (dvd decoder, sound card (btw the sound card should go to second or third pci and never under the vid card).

If this is a fresh setup dont use any tweakers etc before its stable and running.

And make sure that in your mobo bios you did some basic settings(agpx4 ,agp aparture size (try 128) ) and many other things that you can find in this forum if you look around a little.

This post helps:

you probably have to remove everything in the video key in the registry. mark fox is the one to ask, as i have no experience with winxp (at least, i was never able to update drivers with that damn OS.
