Today I tried to install the omega 1182 driver. The older omega driver was already installed (1042c).
I thought simply overwriting the older driver wouldn't cause any problem 'cause I did it with the detonator ones (without problems). Ok, deinstalled the omega apps (directory), used the nvidia_wxp_omega_1182.exe to install the new version. Opened the device manager > graphic card > right click > "Update Driver" > Selected "Display a list...", clicked "Next" > clicked the "have disc button > choosed the omegadriver\driverKX\quality directory and the "nv4_disp.inf". It installed fine and then asked for the nv4_mini.sys file which was located in the omegadriver\driverKX directory. All files were copied to the directories they belong to (system, help etc.). But at the end of the install a error message apeared. Sorry I've the German version of Win XP so I have to translate: "The system couldn't continue the install process because of a missing file" It didn't tell me what file is missing or where it is located and no "search for that file" dialog box apeared. It didn't bother me with the "restart your system" box. I took a look in the device manager, the new driver were installed but disabled. I activated the driver and restarted my system. After booting the resolution were reset to 640x480 @ 60Hz and the driver were disabled again. I enabled it, (it gave me a warning message that the device might not work) set my res back to 1280 x 1024 @ 85Hz. I can even play 3d accelerated games after I enabled the driver. But after every restart it reset my resolution to 640x480 and Windows disables the Graphic card drivers (telling me something about Code 28 in the device properties). It is driving me mad 'cause I use two OS (Linux and Win XP) and I am restarting frequently. So I thought the reason of that are the omega driver. So I uninstalled 'em and installed the detonator. But even these driver give me the same error message after install and show the same behaviour after every restart. Here is what I tried so far (and it didn't solve the problem): -uninstall the omega driver, removed 'em from the device manager -installed older/new omega driver / detonator driver (even the origina WinXP driver) with the -same results/behaviour -mixed steps 1-2 -deleted all files in the temp folder (the setup seems to unpack their file there) -removed the drivers in the "save mode" of WinXP -used NVcleaner (I know it is made for Win9X) my system: Athlon XP 1800 256MB DDR ram Soundblaster live value 1024 SCSI card in PCI slot 1 (under the AGP port 'cause other PCI slots are full > can cause problems) gigabyte dual bios motherboard with via chipset Can somebody help me? What did I wrong? You guys are my only hope to solve that problem WITHOUT reinstalling/reformat everything (which I did 2 weeks ago) Where are the NVIDIA video settings stored in the registry? |

After uninstalling DO not install the newer drivers but:
Install the card as a standard VGA adapter ...then restart and when you come back to the desktop (hopefully as standard vga) go and install the new driver. Also clear the temp file before you uninstall so it cant find the drivers and reinstall by its self from that Directory.(in other words fool windows into forcing the install as a standard VGA). |

I did what you said (afterward), but it didn't help. In most cases WINXP reinstalls the old driver after restart if you don't update 'em.
But finally my problem is solved. There is an option in the properties panel of the Graphiccard (device manager) > something like "use installed driver" This option tries to solve problem by copeing the driver files which were missing. I hit the button and it tried to copy only one file from the nvidea detonator directory (nvdesk32.dll) but failed. I had a backup of this file and copied it to system32 "per hand". After a new restart all things are back to normal. I think I'll continue my life without Omega for the next days... |
