I have an Athlon XP 1800+ with Asus nForce 220, TwinMOS 512 MB DDR RAM, Asus Geforce 4 Ti 128 MB. I frequently encounter lockups while playing games, GTA III, Spiderman: The Movie, Unreal Tournament 2003. I tried applying the Q321178 fix but this did not solve the problem. My PC only crashes when playing games, I have absolutely no problems. It stays stable even when I work on it for a 12 hours.
I have found this issue on Q321178 article. Microsoft Support Website does not carry the fix but after doing a search on Filemirrors.com, I found the fix. --- MICROSOFT HAS IDENTIFIED a problem with running DirectX 8.1 on AMD processor-based systems. Some DirectX 8.1 programs may simply stop working on AMD PCs, and it has come up with a patch to fix the problem. The problem applies to DirectX programs running under Windows XP on AMD platforms. Intel processors are unaffected. According to the posting, "the DrawIndexedPrimitive function stops working without displaying an error or debug message". Microsoft fesses up and says the error occurs because of "a code error in the AMD-specific optimized code. This code error may lead to heap corruption," they say. --- source: winbeta.org I have an ASUS A-10 case so I dont think cooling is a problem. MB: 38 degrees celcius, CPU: 40 degrees after intensive gaming. (usually ends up with a lockup )Also this is a server case and it should give adequete power to the devices. (it supports mounting of 6 HDDs.) I had the same lockup problems with my older generic case. I have tested my RAM with the program I downloaded from http://www.simmtester.com. I ran a Burn-In loop for 6 hours but no problems detected. I have tried both ASUS drivers for my Mobo & Geforce and latest nVidia reference drivers (nForce 1.05, Detonator 30.82) I have flashed the MB to the latest BIOS (1.03). I have all the Windows Update fixes and also the Q321178 fix I mentioned earlier. Does anyone else have the nForce 220 + Geforce 4 Ti combo and running on Windows XP? I dont know what the problem might be. Any comments? |

I have exactly the same components AND problems as you..... Under directX 9.0 ( beta ) i never had the throw-out-of-3D games error again, so it is positively a directX ( 8.1 )error. In time when DirectX 9.0 is released this error will belong to the past.......

fix ?? u mean directX 9.0 (beta2) ? Can't remember where i got it from and besides its timebombed to expire somewhere this month. Better wait for official release i think, but now you know what could be causing the problems.

I have a fixed DX9 beta1, so it doesn't expire... can someone get me a timebombed thing so I can get back to DX8.1? I think DX9 is causing PSO to hold on a white screen... I don't know what's up with it, but I wanna use DX8.1 again so it'll work...
If Beta2 fixes it, can I get a link to that?
