Default Post QUE: Keeping manufacturer's drivers in sync

Hi all.
Is it possible (and safe) to mix-n-match new NVidia drivers with the older releases supplied by a manufacturer.
e.g. My new Asus card (driver 28.80) comes with a customized Properties panel that allows 3D displays and a few other things.
What will happen if I update the drivers, say with 40.41, and I keep Asus's Properties panel?
Would the system still work? (I assume they implement their extras with routines that aren't part of the reference drivers and an update will not destroy these routines).
Thanks in advance.

If you want to keep Asus specific utilities and such you better stick with their drivers. Use the latest that Asus offers on their website.
