Would you buy FX 5600XT for $50?

Tigerdirect.com has nVidia GeForce FX 5600 Video Card / 128MB DDR / AGP 8X / VGA card for $50 after rebate.

After a brief research, I found out this was an excellent deal when it comes to 5600 (regular) card and also pretty good deal comparing even with other store's 5600xt card.

But a further research revealed that the card at Tigerdirect is in fact closer to 5600xt. Apparently it runs at Core Clock speed of 235 MHz instead of 325 Mhz of regular 5600 card.

Anyway, for 50 dollars, I think it still is a sweet deal. So what do you think?

Of course, it depends on the need. I am using nVidia MX440 card that came with Dell computer almost 2 years ago and would like to upgrade it with a cheap video card. Not to fancy... I would be happy if I can run Far Cry or Sacred without eye constraint. My usual activity includes word processing, internet and photos... An occasional video editing of my son's videos. That's all.

It seems less than $70-80 is reasonable for a video card. I thouhgt about buying 9800 card for over $200 but decided that it wasn't worth it. I guess as I get older, I lose my desire to keep up with the current trend when it comes to computing.

Thanks in advance...

I've read before weather it's ture or not that in most cases the 5600 acts like a card with only two pixel pipes. I would pass it by....

Buy at least a FX 5700 256

If you choose for a scheap card i recomend at least a FX 5700with 256 memory.
its' 25$ more and sure worth the 25$ extra i'm verry happy wit my ASus fx 5700 /TD 256 mem, all games working fluid with this card with the 61.80 ForceWare.
its tripple worth the diffrerence between those cards.

I had a simular card like you want to buy and with Far Cry ,you really cry about the performance.

But this is only my opinion, i think other 5700 users will agree with me

i Have an Asus FX 5700/TD 8x 256 never had trouble with game play, with the 6180 drivers i can set the highest configuration , so no need for expensive Cards, many people wil disagree this with me.

Thank you for your replies.

Asus FX5700 with 256 memory is hard to find here in America and the cheapest I saw is about $150. With that much money, I would go with Radeon 9800SE then overclock it.

The only reason why I even consider this model is because it is really cheap. What can you get for $50 nowadays?

So I guess my question is does the card justify the price tag at $50?

Thanks.

in my opinion this card is not worth the plactic it was built with, you would most likely be buying another one in about two months,it would be like buying a kia for 6000 new,but spending most of your time at the shop, especially if it is a generic card, with generic memory. later

PS:i just noticed Zardon posted a low end gpu roundup in the news section,i has posted some models to choose from for arround what you are looking to spend.

Actually, if you look at Tigerdirect's photo photo gallery for this card, the picture displayed is the Mad Dog Dominator FX5600 Plus which is a full blown FX5600 Non-Ultra which is clocked at 325MHz instead of the 235 MHz that Tigerdirect's product description indicates. I actually ordered one of these last week from Tigerdirect.ca (I live in Canada but they offer the exact same products) and it should come any day now so I'll update when I recieve it.

Please do so. I would be very much interested in what you find in the card.
It will be greatly appreciated as well.

Thanks.

Well, I got it in finally and it is the Mad Dog card I mentioned earlier. It was the standard 325 MHz core and 550MHz memory but using Auto Detect with Coolbits I was able to get 367 MHz core and 637 MHz memory (not sure if this is a good overclock for this card or not). Have to do more research to see how high I can actually get it. But the bad thing is that it looks like Tigerdirect's all sold out for now. However, when I was looking for a new budget card to replace my toasted 64-bit FX5200 I noticed that for the price I paid before rebates I was able to find a Radeon 9600 non-pro for about $10 CDN more so there are plenty of good cards to be had at the before-rebate price range; I just needed to go with Nvidia because I more used to using their cards under Linux.

Donator
I built a new system recently for a client that asked for a 5700 XT and I did benchmark on it and my 8500 ATI OEM beat this card. This card is slower than than 5200 ultra. Save your money and buy the next card up.
