noob needing some help - GF FX5900XT

I recently installed the latest drivers from nVidia (ver.6177 win2kxp) that I was hoping would fix a problem I had with Counter-strike in OpenGL video mode. CS would freeze my system mid game with the previous drivers (ver.5672), sometimes resulting in total lockup. The problem appears to be resolved... however, at the cost of nearly 40-50 fps in Counterstrike. My experience with that game and the settings required to perform at top level might be "novice" but I know the card is capable of far greater frame rates and would appreciate any help in relation to the problem I currently face. And to help, here is what I'm working with:

AMD 2500+ barton
1024 mb of memory (2x512 DDR)
Shuttle mobo : nFORCE 2 ultra 400
BFG GF FX5900XT 128mb (AA off / AF off / vert sync off)
Windows XF Pro
Cable Internet >256 consistant

--- CS settings ---
OpenGL 800x600
cl_cmdrate 101
cl_updaterate 75
rate 9999
fps_max 101 (getting 60 usually monitored by net_graph 3 ingame)
fps_modem 0

Anyone with Competitive CS settings and/or Video tweaking skills please HELP

gaming name : nV3|state <sikarios>

Thank you
