6800 Ultra Fails ME!

Okay Guys, This is my first post and I am kind of a noob with hardware. Anyway here goes. I have a brand new computer. AMD athlon fx 53, 2 gigs ram, audigy 2, and evga 6800 ULTRA. I have had consistant problems with ethier the sound, the video or both during both of the games I have loaded so far. Doom 3 and fary cry. At first with DOOM I was losing audio consistantly, IF I toggled surround on and off I would often get it back. I updated all drivers and direct x, Even going so far as to get the beta driver 61.77. I updated the spound driver as well... None of these worked. And I was getting the occasional total lockup in doom 3. Well it was suggested to me to switch the sounds card port. Which I did, I then reinstalled... Now doom crashes after a few to ten minutes.. Freezes completly. I dont lose audio but that may be a function of its life span.
Farcry, was losing audio and freezing sparsly. Now it stutters long 30 second pauses after running normally for a few minuties ultimatly locking up completly. I am completly frustrated as I thought a machine of these specs would at least give me a few weeks of easy playing which I have been waiting so long to get!! (one month build time!@!) I really hope you guys can help me.... The tech support is open 9-5 for 5 days a week.. Its funny I work that and more with no chance of ever getting to call HA HA... sorry for the lenght.

SIncerly appreciated,
Brian

Are you overclocking, do you have the latest chipset, is your bios the latest version, do you have the latest soundcard driver.

I do have the latest sound card driver. I am not over clocking. I am not sure about the bio's. It should not be over heating. I am contemplating exchanging for an ATI x 800 XT. I hear they have fewer issues. If you can tell me how to check bios I will. My mother board is ASUS AV8 and the chip is a 939 pin. Thanks guys any opions would be helpful.

No, its not a silly question at all. Most people over look PSU's but with these new demanding hardwares its very important to have a good psu, specially if you have a 6800Ultra witch is a very power hungry card. Check the rails of your PSU, specially the 12V. You can use aida32 to check them, its a freeware you should find it if you google it.

Thanks mainman.

From what I have read the previous 480 watt power supply requirement was reduced to 380 watt. Unfortunately, it requires current cards to get a bios update. I am also not sure if any PCB revision was done. With multiple manufacturers of the cards, who knows if a bios update will work depending on how their PCB was done.

I have also read that a ~400+ power supply does not mean the card will work.
A brand name supply (PC Power & Cooling, Enermax, Antec, etc) seems to work at ~425+ range. No name supplies cause crashes, lockups, stuttering, etc.

Another point is the amount of attachments on the line being used to attach to the card. In other words the card shold be the only device attached to the power supply lines. You have more than one line and each line splits a number of times. Ensure that the lines used have no other 'splits' off of it in use.

I pulled most of the above information from the MaximumPC mag's over the last few months.

i found the 6800 ultra works best with one of the molex connectors directly from the PSU with nothing else coming from that specific cable being shared with the card. the other one was fine being shared with other components.
