got a lot of stuff running in the background? Old winxp install? Try the newest dhzp release balanced probably, alos did you disable AA in the CP, it'll cause a performance hit like that but was enabled by default cause it looked better

they are probably running in dx 8.1 maybe even 7.0 if you type in your console mat_dxlevel 81 it should increase your fps.

Radeon or gf? what resolution? whats your soundcard? Jumpiness and certain audio confugs seem to go hand in hand with hl2....

onboard isnt the best if you want fps. getting an audigy card preferably an audigy 2 zs will increase fps i can guarantee you that but im really not sure exactly how much. and will reduce stuttering. also make sure on your geforce 6800GT your 2d and 3d clocks are the same. on a 2.4 p4 you are bottlenecking the 6800GT card also that is also a slight problem with hl2. are you running dual channel ram? get sisoftware sandra the free version and run the memory bandwidth benchmark and post a screenshot of your findings. also run a cpu arithmetic benchmark off sandra and post that also.

thanks alot for the link above bwx it helped me alot , it's a shame that they spent such a long time developing and testing the game and as a result a game with so many bugs.i hope valve can get that problem fixed soon.

Hmm I don't get it, I have a 6800 GT and playing at 1600x1200 with 4aa & 8af and never had any stutter or problems, it plays smooth as silk, I have v-sync on btw.

You should have very smooth gameplay as well with your GT.

I play 1200 x 900 2xAA and 4 xAF with everything on high and it is smooth- once in a while I get the odd stutter- but mostly it is good to go.
