Ok first of all. I have a Gf2 mx 200 on XP pro.
Everything worked fine in win 98 but had to upgrade to xp pro for work related things. Ok. The computer will not run any opengl or direct3d games. It will not even run the 3d windows screen savers. When these things are ran the computer locks up complelty. Mouse wont move ctrl-alt-del wont even work and you have to power off. I bought a GF4 card and got the same results. I have tried many many drivers. Including older ones and the omega ones. When I installed the omega drivers I started up Halflife counter-strike and it actually let me join a game and play for about 30 seconds. Before it wouldnt even join the game it would freeze up before that. Thx for any help. Also. I just updated to the new nvidia drivers. And it does the same thing as the omega drivers except gets an error msg. Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Program C:\directory of .exe of the game. abnormal program termination. Then it goes back to windows when i click on ok. Lamar

Perhaps you had already thought of it, but why don't you try backing up your data and do a clean install of WinXP Pro? Upgrading to WinXP from older OSes are a pain sometimes.

Update your bios, your chipset driversm and anything else...hit up windows update and get everything off of there and find your other updates....chipset drivers are important

Lamar, I would try this procedure. First, make sure all of your essential files (personal and downloads, etc.) are backed up off disk (HD), say on a CDRW, Zip, DVD, something!! Then, using the Win98 boot disk, fdisk - delete any existing partitions and then create a 5 GB partition (active) and a 15 GB second partition. Reboot and format both partitions, should be C and D. I would make sure you use Fat32 and not NTFS (better for gaming
) Then, clean install (can use upgrade Win XP) Windows onto C drive. I would use the C drive for Windows, Office apps, antivirus, etc. and the D drive for games and personal files, downloads, backups, etc.. After installing Windows, update the video card to the 40.72 GEForce certified drivers. Install the most recent sound card drivers, mouse,etc.. Before I forget, if you have an Intel motherboard chipset, install the most recent chipset drivers before any other (including video); if it's any other chipset, such as VIA, SIS, AMD, whatever, install those in the same manner (before any other). Update Win XP to SP1 and then install A game (as in 1 - game that is). Try the game out - should work!! If you are not sure about any of this go to PC911 website or Maximum PC, both have instructions on performing the above tasks. There are alternatives, such as doing the above and installing Win98 (first) and then WinXP as a second OS. I truly hope I haven't totally confused you. Again, PC911 (www.pcnineoneone.com) has some excellent procedures. Best of luck!!Starmaster |
