new detonator 41.91...hummmm

Nvidia released the 41.91 drivers for linux today and this causes me to ponder. I was under the impression that the linux drivers and the windows drivers are developed together. This would mean that there should be 41.91 drivers for windows......I wonder when we will be seeing those? Its weird cause usually the linux drivers released are behind the windows drivers. Well I guess to those with sources keep your eyes open cause we might be getting some more 41.xx drivers released soon and maybe Nvidia will shift to a 42.xx or higher series next.

Oh geez. Anyone would die to get extra 3dMarks. Has anyone read the article about the Radeon 9500Pro at Tomshardware? Cuz in there they mention that the Ti4600 gets almost just as good of a 3dMark score as the Radeon 9700 Pro.

Toms Hardware:
Quote:
The 3D Mark 2001 SE benchmark becomes less meaningful when you use faster processors. Our results placed the NVIDIA GeForce 4 Ti 4600 very close to the Radeon 9799, something that would rarely happen with real live benchmarks. The Ti 4200-8x rating also seems much too high. Either the NVIDIA drivers are too well optimized for this benchmark or the ATI are inadequately optimized. Another explanation could also be that the CPU affected the result too much.
Doesn't it seem odd that everytime we get new drivers the we might see a slight increase in 3dMark? I think that nVidia is just catering to us to make us think that or scores are better. They are just optimizing the drivers for 3dMark and games that are tempermental. I'm begining to think the the driver updates are getting kinda lame. All you and your 3dMarks. You can't tell me that a Ti4600 would be equivalent to a Radeon 9799... I dunno, this is all odd to me. Seems like they just want our 3dMarks to keep going up while avoiding other things that they could change in the drivers.

I thought 3DMark was supposed to be a "synthetic-real" benchmark, using basically the Max Payne engine for "Lobby".

Oh yes, when "the Matrix" finally made it to UK terrestrial TV, one of the scenes was very reminiscent of "Lobby" in 3DMark2001

There ARE other more synthetic benchmarks - GL Excess, (openGL, not D3D), I would rate as more artificial.

Ok, it’s partly true that Linux and Windows drivers are developed together. So yeah, if Linux has 41.91 drivers it means that NVIDIA is up there somewhere too...maybe in front maybe a bit behind.

Why no leaks? Well, NVIDIA now tends to choose more carefully who they supply the drivers too. They want to get rid of leaks I presume and have been pretty successful most of the time.

I have contacts with few OEM’s and I know they get less drivers now (and for a good while now) too then before. As to developers - well they really get next to nothing, ok they got 30.82 and 41.09 before we did but that's about it! In fact, these are the two last sets that they have received for download. Nothing in between unless they download sets from NVIDIA public (not secure) website.

As to 41.32 - I really don't know where that version comes from. Developers certainly did not get these drivers.

Tom's Hardware said they had 41.34 at the time they posted their Geforce FX review - maybe true, they have sweet deal going with NVIDIA and they have had the NV30 card for a good while now so by now they might have even newer driver but believe me - they will not leak them so forget about it...

Are new drivers coming soon? I'm not sure. Current public 41.xx drivers do not have full (maybe partial) support for DX9 so it’s possible that NVIDIA will release a DX9 beta set of drivers in the near future.

They exist no doubt - since NV30 is kind of a DX9 card - but perhaps they are still early(ish) in development but NVIDIA might want to rush it to make full dx9 drivers available to NV30 reviewers. Originally first reviews were meant to show up "mid-december(ish)" but I'm not sure if a clear date has been set yet.

What else can I say, NVIDIA PR don't really want to say anything about drivers at the moment, at least not to me, maybe you'll have better luck so if you wish, send one of their PR people an e-mail, maybe you'll get a response - which will be better then what I have been getting for a while now = lol.

Let's hope something will show up soon though, after all, X-MAS is soon so maybe NVIDIA will get in holiday spirit and posts something for us...

I have to agree here, however I will go one step further. I want lay the hype issue on just the "kids" but the "Grown Ups" as well. I don't mind chk'ing my system when I upgrade it, or make some "Hardware" changes to increase the performance, However this "obession" with the 3DMark is silly and irratating to me.

Well that is MHO!!

I just like the new features to try out and the though lately limited performance increases. Its free performance and I also like newer drivers for better stability. I figure I might as well enjoy it while I can cause soon the geforceFX will be out and Nvidia will be working on speeding it up and work less and less on speeding up the gf4.

Thats Very True! But remember all the Detinator drivers designed by nVIDIA work on all cards! Not just the FX! Also without the benchmark programs how would you know if the drivers you installed are a improvement or not? I Only use 3 Benchmark programs GLexcess,3Dmark 2001 SE, and Si Sandra 2003. The rest are just eye candy!
