6600GT freezing problems

When playing Enemy Territory my computer freezes. It happens after about 1-2h of playing the game, after that the freezes become more frequent. Freezes don't completely crash my computer, they make the game stop and make the sound go into loop (for about 5 seconds 1second-long sample is repeated, then it's more like 0.1s repeated over and over) for about 30 seconds, after which everything goes back to normal. I checked the temperature on my video card's GPU when that happens - it reaches 60C (50C when idle), which is acceptable... Yesterday I was playing Star Wars Galaxies 6 hours straight and not even once did the game froze. I haven't had any problems with BF2, either. So I'm thinking it's an OpenGL only problem...

I'm using the XG80.40 drivers (but it happens with 71.89, 77.72, 77.77 also), why am I using them? Read on...

Earlier I was having problems with freezes in Windows (which are now gone, thanks to 80.40's) in different situations (while working with xhtml and running a few proggies in the background, for example). I don't know for sure what caused those, all I know is that when I tried resizing columns in services.msc (that was my 'platform' for tests with different drivers...) Windows would stop responding for about 30 seconds (first - windows stops responding but I can still move the cursor around the screen, then it's all frozen, sometimes monitor restarts as if changing resolutions), then freeze again and again if I didn't close the window that made my puter freeze. I'm mentioning this because I think it might be somehow connected...

My vcard is a PixelView GF6600GT.

Yes, I've tried Driver Cleaner... pls help :<

Re

I have the same freezings in some games, and Windows XP, with these drivers , i solve it to enable shader 2.0 with Rivatuner 15.6, in the shader option set the shader option Force 2.0 for 3D.
In nvTweak enable the option in the OpenGL section ,enable GLSL 2.0 Shader.
This work for me, I'm a happy 77.77 driver user now.
If U have Overclocked your card , do not set the overclocking higher than
what the "Detect optimal frequencies" setting, in my case, Core 552 mhz ,-Mem 1.01 Ghz.

I can go to Core 580 MHz, Mem 1.1Ghz, and Doom3 ,BF2, HL2 runs withouth problems.
But some other older games freezes or display gliches,(Starwars games)

I have an Asus NX6600GT -128 Mb DDR3

b.t.w look for Bios update on the vendor site, for my card on the Asus site there was an update what solves the black/white TV Out bug.

Hope it solves your problems too.

GLSL 2.0 Shader by was enabled by default when I checked.
What I did was I turned off 'OpenGL version string override' (was set to 1.5 :o ) -- I played some ET, no crashes ever since. But maybe I was just lucky this time :\ I'll keep testing and keep you updated...

After few day of testing it seems that the freezes in ET are gone, although freezes in Windows still occur occasionally. Happened to me earlier today after opening a new tab in Opera. It's not as annoying as it was with 7x.xx drivers because it doesn't happen nearly as often. ZeroOne, what did you do to prevent WinXP from freezing? What you told me to do only affects 3d games, I guess :\
