I have been having some form of this problem ever since i got my BFG geforce 6800gt 256mb AGP card. First it was my computer screen blacking out and not coming back in basically any game I played after a time frame of anywhere from 15 mins to 2 hours. I used to have a Radeon 9700 pro (128mb) and never had this problem. I called BFG and we did some tests and found that my 12 volt rail was only getting 11.05-11.2 volts and this apparently seemed like a likely culprit. Since i was within my 30 day best buy guarantee, i went ahead and switched out my video card for a new one of the same type (I noticed the heatsink on it was differemt, on my new one it was like a chrome BFG sink, on my old 6800gt (the one i took in) it had this corny looking sticker on the heatsink, anyways...) and popped the new one in. Thought maybe this fixed my problem because it seemed to not really happen again... Then for some reason it started up again.
I then realized that my antec 430 true blue power supply was still under its warranty, so i sent that out and got a new one rma'd back to me. Put that in, same problem and still a very low voltage on the 12 volt rail. I then noticed some settings in my mobo bios for ECC registered ram were actually turned on, even though the main setting that chooses if you have ECC ram or not was turned OFF (mine is not ECC) and turned those off since I have non-ECC ram and that REALLY seemed to fix EVRYTHING and i was very happy. eventually i put my case back together and plugged everything in and the problems came back :o(. That power supply has 2 power leads coming out of it that say "fan only" and the power supply outputs more power out these leads based on what its temperature sensors think (effectively reving the fans up and down). I unplugged both fans from those (one is a side panel intake fan, the other is output on the top of my case) and took my side off, and everything once again seemed fine (the game i play most is GUILD WARS so its my main test, but like i said the thing failed in any game (short of like a java applet card game)). This was also after reverting back to normal nvidia drivers. Well, i got real happy but was VERY unhappy with the stock drivers because they cause a video overlay issue for me whenever i would watch a video, I would have to bring up the advanced settings and go into the video overlay section then all the sudden my video would look fine (it would have a color or gamma problem before jumping into those settings, and literally without changing anything, all the sudden the video would clear up. I do not have this issue with omega or driverheaven drivers). So after a while I got fed up and got the new zeropoint drivers (I like omega's better... but he hasnt released an nvidia set in a long time) and put my case back together and plugged all the fans back in (not knowing that my case fans could be causing an issue) and of course i have the issue again. At this point, i have the newest zeropoint drivers, have my side panel off, and no EXTRA fans plugged in and i can do basiacally whatever i want. BUT now after playing guild wars for extended periods of time (like 4 hours and up probably) when i go to EXIT the game sometimes i get a blue screen error, and last night when i shut my computer down (i coincidentally had not played any games whatsoever, but my computer was on for like the past week straight) I got a screen that was just garbled, like really bad textures all over the place (hard to explain) and my computer hung. Now i am just worried that im doing a lot of damage to my computer or something, although I can do whatever i want on it and its fine while im playing games... just when i choose to get out of guild wars or shut down my computer, things go haywire. I apologize for the long post, but i am pretty experienced in building computers and trouble shooting issues and I just can't come up with what is wrong in this. My full specs are.... athlon 64 3200+ socket 754 asus k8v deluxe motherboard 1 stick of 1 gigabyte non-ecc ram BFG geforce 6800gt 256 mb AGP card Soundblaster Audigy 2 platinum with front plate 3 1/4 " floppy sony cd-rw/dvd-rom (1 drive) hitachi 160gb 7200 sata HD (deskstar 750) antec 430 watt trueblue PS standard rear case fan and internal power supply fan hooked up 2 more fans, one on side, one on top, NOT hooked up as u can see, with only one hard drive, and one cd drive, my 430 watt PS should be just fine, but who knows. Once again, sorry for the long post but I am just amazed at how many problems I get (my 9700 pro card could not perform properly with 8x AGP (on 2 different botherboards with 2 different cpu's mind you) and it had this freezing issue which was completely solved by going to 4x AGP, which seemed to be an unheard of problem also) And these problems just seem so weird. Thanks for reading this if you have, any suggestions are greatly appreciated. p.s. - I have changed like every mobo bios setting that i can also, this really just racks my brain, i hate feeling like i dont have my computer completely under control. |
