Stupid question

Here is my config: MSI KT266APro2 (with Hyperion 4.45), 512Mo DDR, XP1700+, Win98SE (updated), Audigy Player (newest drivers...) and a Creative GeForce 3 Ti 500. My system is clean and I installed direct X 9.

Can anyone help me? I have a problem with basically all versions
of the detonators post-28.32... When I try to install new ones,
windows loads very slowly and it is impossible to install any other program on the hard disk... The system just locks up. It also happens very often when I try to surf the net or anything else...
But the strange thing is I can run a complete test under 3D Mark2001SE and I can also play Unreal Tournament 2003 online normally.

There are no stupid questions - only questions that are unanswered and ones that are answered Now, first things first - are you completely uninstalling the drivers before you install the new ones?

Yes, but...

Thanks for that fast answer! Well, yes, I always uninstall the old drivers before trying to replace them. But the problem is I had completely cleaned the system so I could start anew with brand new drivers (Hyperion and creative 41.80). As it didn't work, I tried many different versions of detonators, tried millions of combinations with other drivers (Via 4.43,... DirectX8.1b,...), put my BIOS parameters upside-down (spelling? ) ... What else can I do? Shall I study your tip again and again until I find there's a lot of gold in my garden? Or shall I just try to play UT2K3 with my electronic watch?

I need a doctor...

Hmmm, this sounds interesting... are you running DirectX 9?

EDIT: Also, what bios settings do you have? Like, AGP apeture, fast writes, etc.

Interesting, hmmm.... well, do you need more recent drivers for some reason?

EDIT: Ooh, digi is getting damn close to 3000! If Uberlord doesn't put on an insane burst of powerful posting crazyness in the next couple of days, I think he is going to lose the race And in other news, I'm approaching avatar time - any ideas?

Well, I noticed the old NV28.32 aren't what I would call really good in terms of 3D performance... I know I am the owner of an "old" graphics card, but as I was able to try several versions of the drivers, I noticed there are some recent ones that give better, faster and smoother graphics in 3D games.

Well, I don't really see that much of a difference, personally - with the modern games, you won't even really notice a 10% increase in FPS with old and outdated cards if you ask me... however, I'll keep thinking about it and see if I can think of something to fix it...

Lol - yep, a new video card would be nice for a lot of us and solve a lot of problems - however, there's only one... but you have a really good chance of winning it as there will be no more than 10000 entries for this one card, and it is unlikely that all 10000 possible numbers will be taken - probably more around 1000 at most... so good luck in the competition! Pick the right number... but don't post there until after you are at 10 - they don't like that around here

Lol - I'm imagining that I have the card now! Look at my pretty card go... reality sets in... and the card turns into a CD with a fan taped to it and some pcb-colored-paper taped on the side... Awww, its gone! Now I have to lower my resolution again (moves from 1600x1200 on desktop to 1024x768)... but yes, I know what you mean - and if I don't win here, once the GFFX and r350 are out I'm probably going to go get me a AIW9700 Though not spending money would be nice, I need a new videocard more than anything else now for my computer.........

This is getting more and more off topic... if you don't mind, I'm going to stop until I can think of something relevant to say However, you do realize that the meaning of life is actually 42, right?

You are absolutely right.

Another question. Would windows XP help? It'd mean a lot of time in front of my PC, trying to download new drivers (for XP) and stuff. But if it's worth it, I'd dive into it with a smile on my face.
<--- Just like that, yes.

Oh, if you don't already have Windows XP installed, then it is most definitely worth getting! Windows XP upgrades never hurt anything but pocket books, and that is really a minor consideration compared to the infinitely better stability and driver support Windows XP now has... If you can update and don't mind I would recommend it, even if it isn't going to solve your video card problems Oh, and you're up to 10 posts already Check www.hardwareheaven.com/competitions to see what numbers are picked before posting your number

Thank you very much. I might consider installing Windows XP then. If that means I can get newer drivers working properly, then it's a bliss. No matter how long it'll take to inst... Hey! 10???
Gotta rush to the contest page!

Hi again!

I'm just posting this to tell you I got rid of most of the problems simply by flashing my GeForce 3's BIOS and my motherboard's one. I took some risks, but it was worth it! I won't have to buy a new WinXP.

Can I see a difference? You bet! I am now able to install new detonators and all I can say is I have a 3DMark2K1 SE score that's over 450 points superior to the previous one (sometimes there are 12fps more than before, particularly during the Nature test). Moreover, graphics are slightly better in games like UT2K3, but most of all, they're smoother (IF there's no major lag).

Why didn't I try that solution before???

Glad to hear you got that fixed up! Normally though BIOS flashes fix big problems that really break stuff, not somewhat minor ones, so it was a bit counter intuitive! Well, I hope to see you around more!
